Hukka sauna elves are the carved soapstone figures in this collection, each with a cheerful smile and a different hat. You can choose a friendly face for your heater or give one as a Finnish sauna gift. Each is a small sauna accessory and does not change how your heater works. Each also works as a massage stone once it is comfortably warm to the touch.

What a Hukka sauna elf is

Each figure is carved from Finnish soapstone in Tuupovaara, Finland. In Finnish folklore, the saunatonttu watches over bathers and guards the sauna. Set yours with its face showing on the sauna stones of an electric or wood burning sauna heater. Soapstone holds heat well and is also used to build many wood burning sauna stoves.

Choose a hat

Elli wears a little handle hat, while Jolle has a stacked cone hat with a tiered point. Lyyli wears a wide-brimmed bucket hat, and Reiska has a peaked baseball cap. Sulo wears a holiday hat, while Tahvo has a tall, single-point cone hat. Each stands under 3 inches tall and weighs less than half a pound, with Lyyli and Reiska about two and a half inches tall.

Massage and the rest of your sauna

Let the elf warm on the stones, then lift it off and wait until it feels comfortably warm. Press its hat into a tight spot on your shoulders or roll its smooth head over your neck. Rinse with plain water when you clean the stones.

Your questions answered

What is a Hukka sauna elf?

It is a small soapstone figure carved in Finland, with a smile and a hat. It sits on your heater stones through sauna sessions, as soapstone tolerates sauna heat. The different hat shapes help you choose a character you like.

What is the folklore behind the sauna elf?

In Finnish folklore, this guardian spirit watches over bathers and guards the sauna. It was said to live in the small space between the stove and the wall, to be kind and to love peace and quiet. Bathers behaved, closed the door properly and left it a little steam.

How do I use and care for a Hukka sauna elf?

Set it on heater stones and ladle water on the stones for steam as usual. For massage, warm it there, lift it off and wait until comfortably warm before pressing the hat against your shoulders or rolling the head over your neck. Rinse it with plain water when cleaning the stones.

Where can I get a sauna elf like the ones in Finnish saunas?

The six Hukka elves here are carved from soapstone in Tuupovaara, Finland, and sit on the stones of any electric or wood burning heater. The hollow steam spirit cup that bubbles on stones in some Finnish saunas is a different piece we do not list. Finnish bathers keep the custom of one ladle of water for the guest, one for the host and one for the sauna elf. Choose your Hukka sauna elf here.
