Choose a built-in griddle around your outdoor kitchen island opening, fuel supply and the room you want on the cooking surface. Widths here range from 15 or 16 inches with one burner to 30 inches with two burners and 41 inches with three. Separate burner knobs let you use two heat zones on the wider plates to sear on one side and cook gently on the other. Compare each listing’s cutout before choosing your griddle size, then check whether a stainless steel cover or lid is included.

How to choose your griddle

Start with the cutout, not the overall width. A 30-inch griddle needs an opening roughly 28 to 31 inches wide, depending on the brand. Check depth and height too. Two brands share cutouts between their own 30-inch grills and griddles, so an existing grill opening may work.

Choose a propane griddle for a tank or a natural gas griddle for a house gas line. Without gas, the 16- and 30-inch electric griddle options use 120-volt outlets and need one or two dedicated circuits. Some gas models also need an outlet.

Masonry, concrete and metal islands take the griddle without an insulating liner. Wood or composite framing needs the brand’s liner. On one brand, the liner and trim kit cannot fit together. If you are planning without an island, consider a griddle cart for a freestanding station.

Frequently asked questions

What size cutout does a built-in griddle need?

A 16-inch plate needs an opening about 15 inches wide; a 30-inch plate needs about 28 to 31 inches; a 41-inch plate needs about 40 inches. Depth and height vary by brand. Check the listing for exact dimensions.

Can I put a built-in griddle in a wood-framed island?

Yes, with the brand’s insulating liner. This stainless jacket sits between the griddle and the framing. Masonry, concrete and metal islands do not need it. Order the liner with your griddle.

Does a built-in gas griddle need electricity?

Some built-in griddles need a weatherproof outlet for backlit knobs, a surface light and electric ignition. Plainer push-button models run on gas alone. Electric griddles need one or two dedicated circuits. Check the listing before your electrician leaves.
