DuraBlack stove pipe includes the lengths, fittings and kits that connect a wood stove to the chimney inside your room. Choose painted black stove pipe or unpainted stainless steel, with straight sections, adjustable pieces and adapters to suit the run. The single-wall stovepipe has a painted black finish or an unpainted stainless finish, and it gives off heat into the room. Before choosing your pieces, check the stove outlet diameter and measure the open space between the planned route and anything that can burn.

What DuraBlack does and does not do

This connector stays inside the room where your stove stands. It needs 18 inches of clearance to combustibles, the open air between the pipe and walls, ceilings and anything that can burn. It is the connector for a wood burning stove, and for oil, coal or gas stoves too. Never enclose it or pass it through a wall or ceiling. At that boundary, an adapter connects it to the chimney system. For tighter spaces, DuraVent DVL allows 6 inches from a wall, and you can compare our double wall options with the single wall range.

The pieces of your run

Match the stove outlet diameter, and never reduce it unless the stove maker allows it. Add a stovetop adapter if the collar cannot take the pipe directly. If you need a damper section, it is best placed first out of the stove. Build upward with straight lengths, allowing for the 1 1/4 inch overlap at each joint. Use adjustable elbows for an offset or a tee with a clean-out cap for a rear outlet.

A telescoping length or slip connector fills the last gap. Each connection takes three screws and no sealant. At the chimney, use the adapter specified for your system, such as DuraTech insulated chimney pipe or DuraPlus chimney systems, without mixing their parts. The 6 inch stovepipe kit suits an 8 foot ceiling. The painted and stainless kit builder pages let you choose each piece.

The pipe ends are formed so the joints are drip free, and creosote from the smoke drains back toward the stove instead of escaping at a seam. A trim collar covers the ceiling opening where the pipe meets the chimney adapter. The installation is straightforward when the parts are laid out in order.

Common questions

What is the difference between single wall and double wall stove pipe?

Single wall has one steel layer, gives off heat into the room and needs 18 inches to combustibles. DVL has two walls with air between, keeping its outside cooler and inside hotter. It needs 6 inches from walls and 8 from ceilings, suiting tighter spaces.

Can you cut DuraVent stove pipe?

You can cut DuraBlack at its plain end with a hacksaw or tin snips. Cutting is rarely needed because slip connectors adjust 2 to 10 inches and telescoping lengths adjust 44 to 68 inches. DVL cannot be cut and uses adjustable lengths instead.

Can I use single wall stove pipe outside or through a wall?

No, connector pipe must stay in its room, unenclosed, and cannot pass through a wall, ceiling or attic. At a wall thimble or ceiling support box, an adapter connects to insulated chimney pipe for the remaining route. Keep DuraBlack stove pipe indoors.
