A Superior wood burning fireplace gives you a real wood fire in a new wall. Choose an open fireplace for the crackle or a heater fireplace for more heat in your living room. Each wood-burning fireplace here is a factory built unit that burns real logs. Your builder frames a wall around the firebox and finishes it in stone, tile, or brick. Start with how you want to use the fire, then choose your size and brick.

Superior wood burning fireplaces: open fires and heaters

Open fireplaces give you the look, the flame and the crackle of wood, while the heater fireplaces are made for heating the room. An EPA certified wood burning fireplace has a sealed insulated firebox and ceramic glass door for heat. A blower and outside air kit come with the heaters. An optional forced air kit ducts warm air to other rooms. Compare brands in our wood burning fireplace collection. Sizes, brick and the chimney

Some open models offer widths of 36, 42, or 50 inches with a 30 inch tall opening. The largest has a 48 by 42 inch opening and a floor level fire. Choose brick panels or Mosaic Masonry kiln fired brick, depending on the unit. Patterns include stacked or herringbone. Kiln fired brick comes in ivory, midnight, slate gray, or warm red. Each unit needs an 8 or 12 inch double wall chimney. Chimney pipe is sold separately. Browse our double wall chimney pipe.

Outdoor, a stove or gas instead

The three outdoor units have stainless steel surfaces wherever exposed to weather. Your contractor frames them into a patio wall. Compare an outdoor wood burning fireplace across brands or browse Superior's outdoor line alongside gas options. If you do not want a wall, Superior's freestanding wood stoves stand on a pedestal. Open and outdoor units can take Superior vented gas logs later, and those log sets come in oak or birch. Choose Superior gas fireplaces if you would rather not haul wood, or a gas insert if you already have an opening.

Frequently asked questions

Are Superior wood burning fireplaces prefab fireplaces?

Yes. These are factory built fireplaces, also called prefab. The steel firebox arrives complete. Your builder frames a wall around it and finishes it in stone, tile, or brick. Double wall chimney pipe replaces a masonry chimney. The pipe is sold separately, and we quote the run.

Can I put gas logs in a Superior wood burning fireplace?

Yes. Open and outdoor units can take Superior vented gas logs in oak or birch later. Keep the damper open with vented sets. A vent free set can run with the damper closed, but check local code first. The EPA heater fireplaces are sealed wood heaters and cannot take gas logs.

Which Superior wood fireplaces heat the room?

The four EPA certified heater fireplaces are the choice when heat matters most. They have a sealed firebox, glass door, blower and outside air kit. An optional forced air kit sends warmth to other rooms. Open fireplaces offer warmth nearby, but much of their heat goes up the chimney.

Do Superior wood burning fireplaces hold up to regular burning?

Owners on Reddit say yes. One owner of the open model with the 30 inch tall opening had burned it at least twice a week every winter for two years with no complaints or issues, and liked the outside air supply. Their two wishes: the flue damper door does not seal as tightly as they would like when the fire is off, which they said is true of most fireplaces, and the brick panels came only in red and beige at the time. If you want gray, the kiln fired brick liner on the larger open model comes in slate gray. Another owner chose the outdoor Superior wood burning fireplace for weekly winter fires.
