Lexington Hearth Non Combustible Fireplace Mantels are an option when a wood mantel cannot meet your fireplace’s clearance requirements. If your installer has asked for a noncombustible mantel, start with the fireplace manual. This collection includes shelves and beams with a wood look, plus stone look and painted styles. Choose the look you want, then check the required distance above the firebox opening.

What a non-combustible mantel means above your fireplace

Non-combustible material will not burn. A wood mantel needs clearance because heat rises up the wall. These pieces can usually sit closer, but the fireplace manual and local code still set your fireplace mantel clearance. Reduced clearance is the whole point of a non-combustible mantel, and local building codes can add to the manual's requirements. Compare other kinds in our fireplace mantels collection.

Which fireplace do you have?

A gas fireplace, including direct vent units, pushes heat up the wall above the opening. Follow its manual's mantel distance.

Most electric fireplaces allow a mantel close above them. The slim shelf and the floating shelves suit a long, low linear electric fireplace.

A wood-burning fireplace throws the most heat up the wall, so it asks for the most room above the opening.

What is on this page?

Lexington Hearth mantels are cast in Burncrete and hand-painted. Rustic beams and the shallower non-combustible mantel shelves are cast from molds of real barn beams and old timbers. Other choices include chiseled limestone look and slim concrete look shelves, a painted period style mantel, wall boards and bracket trim.

Most lengths are 48, 60 or 72 inches. Pick the length and color on the page. Every mantel shelf hangs on a hidden steel mounting bracket attached to wall studs, with no corbels to fit. Screws and a touch up kit are included. Hanging takes two people. The largest beam weighs over 200 pounds. Compare our faux wood mantels by name, size and look.

Your questions answered

What makes a mantel non-combustible?

Its material will not burn, unlike wood or foam. Cast stone, concrete type mixes, natural stone and metal are examples. Lexington Hearth uses its patented Burncrete mix, certified non-combustible under ASTM E136. The wood look is paint on a casting, not wood.

How close can a non-combustible mantel be to the firebox?

It can usually sit closer than a wood mantel, but the fireplace manual and local code set the distance. Heat rises up the wall, and a shelf too low can trap it. Call us with your fireplace model.

Can a non-combustible mantel look like real wood?

Yes. Molds of real old beams and timbers capture wood grain, saw marks, cracks and knots. Artists paint each casting by hand for a realistic wood look. You can also choose a limestone look or a smooth concrete look on this page.

Are non-combustible mantels heavy?

They are heavier than foam beams but lighter than solid stone. The largest beam weighs over 200 pounds and its heavy duty bracket needs four wall studs. A steel bracket, screws and touch up kit are included. Two people are needed to hang each non-combustible mantel.
