Your outdoor vent hood needs enough width and reach to cover the grill below. This collection includes outdoor-rated hoods from Summerset and Fire Magic, plus Summerset spacer brackets.

Before you choose an outdoor range hood for a covered patio or pergola, check where the exhaust duct can run. You will need a wall or ceiling mount and an outlet or hard-wired power.

How to choose an outdoor vent hood

Size your outdoor kitchen vent hood wider than the grill, ideally with about 6 inches of overhang per side. A built-in grill measuring 36 inches wide takes a 48-inch hood. Charcoal, wood and windy patios call for bigger hoods.

Compare motors and airflow, too. Summerset's 36-inch hood has one motor; its 72-inch hood has two and about twice the airflow. Summerset hoods have four speed settings and LED lights. Fire Magic uses two blowers and halogen lamps, with outlets that let you vent vertically or horizontally to suit your ductwork.

For more reach over the front grates, choose a Summerset spacer bracket matching your hood width. The 4-inch and 8-inch brackets fit the 36, 42, 48 and 60-inch hoods. Plan the island below with access doors, storage drawers and outdoor cold storage.

FAQ

Do I need a vent hood for an outdoor kitchen?

Yes, if your grill sits under a roof, patio cover or pergola, or between two walls. Smoke, heat and grease collect overhead and can stain the ceiling. Grease is a fire risk. An open-air grill with nothing above it does not need one.

How wide should an outdoor vent hood be?

Allow about 6 inches past each side: a 30-inch grill takes a 42-inch hood, and a 36-inch grill takes a 48-inch hood. Too narrow lets smoke escape around the edges. A spacer bracket extends coverage over the front grates.

How high above the grill should the hood sit?

The bottom of your outdoor vent hood usually sits about 36 inches above the grates, no higher than about 42. This leaves clearance while keeping it close enough to catch smoke. Call us with your ceiling height and we will talk it through.

Can I use a fan or an indoor range hood instead of an outdoor vent hood?

A fan only pushes smoke sideways, often toward guests, and leaves grease collecting on the ceiling. An indoor hood is not built for outdoor damp and moves far less air than these hoods. Under a full roof, a hood ducted outside clears smoke, heat and grease.
