How to choose a wood burning sauna stove

A wood fired sauna stove brings the warmth and crackle of a fire to your traditional sauna experience without wiring. An open cage of stones gives soft, lingering heat, while a closed stove such as the Pro suits people who like strong heat. Think about whether you want to tend the fire inside the hot room or load logs from the next room. Our Sauna Heaters collection brings electric, wood and propane together. You can also browse all our saunas and heaters to plan the whole room.

Harvia wood stoves

Made in Finland, our Harvia heaters include wood stoves for small rooms through to nearly 1300 cubic feet. For soft heat, the Legend stoves hold 264 to 572 pounds of stones in an open black frame. Some versions load through the wall, while others face the lounge as a fireplace behind a wide glass door. For strong heat and plenty of steam, the Pro range suits rooms from 283 to nearly 1300 cubic feet, with cottage versions carrying an 8 gallon wash water tank.

For little floor space, the narrow Linear stoves measure under 18 inches wide. The range covers rooms from 212 to 988 cubic feet. The GreenFlame firebox options, offered on two of the Linear stoves and one of the Legend stoves, burn with 70 percent less carbon monoxide and about 20 percent fewer smoke particles than the standard stove.

HUUM wood stoves

Made in Estonia, the HUUM heater collection includes round designs with generous stone loads. Among our HUUM wood stoves, the Hive Wood range has a stainless steel body and suits rooms from 212 to 565 cubic feet. For rooms up to 635 cubic feet, the Hive Flow page offers a furnace that puts about 75 percent of the wood's heat into the sauna, using less wood for the same heat. Both lines offer versions with a firebox extension for loading logs from the next room.

Narvi wood stoves

Designed and built in Finland, our Narvi range includes compact glass door stoves and a round stove that tucks into a corner and is also made in a version with a hot water tank of about 8 gallons wrapped around it. Plain steel stoves cover rooms from 283 to 848 cubic feet, while a family stove holds 132 pounds of stones. For club rooms, the large 50 kW stove covers 1589 to 2472 cubic feet. These floor standing wood-burning stoves have black painted steel bodies and take logs up to 13 inches long.

Chimney, stones and sizing

Choose the chimney kit, extensions and adapter to 6 inch US pipe on the listing page, since the chimney is not in the stove box. Harvia also offers packages that bundle the chimney kit, protective sheath, floor plate and stones. Add sauna rocks by the box, using the quantity on the listing. Optional heat shields can allow a stove to sit closer to wood walls, but follow the manual for clearances. Multiply room length, width and height in feet, then match those cubic feet to the listing's range using the kW size as its label.

Where a wood stove fits

For an outdoor sauna, browse our outdoor kits or the barrel kits to find the room for your wood-burning heater. HUUM offers chimney kits for barrels as well as routes through the ceiling or wall. If your room has power and you would rather not tend a fire, browse our electric heaters. For a sauna tent, see the portable propane heater. Find buckets, ladles and thermometers in our sauna accessories for ladling water and checking the room temperature.

Your wood stove questions

Can you use a wood burning stove in a sauna?

Yes, with a sauna stove built for the job. Every stove here has a bed or frame of stones made to take ladled water. Match its range to your room's cubic feet. It needs a chimney, and for safety distances, follow the manual.

Does a wood sauna stove need a chimney?

Yes, it needs a chimney. No chimney comes in the box, so you choose the kit, extensions and adapter to 6 inch US pipe on the listing page. HUUM offers ceiling, wall and barrel kits. Harvia also has bundled packages. For installing the stove and chimney, follow the manual.

What makes a good wood burning stove for a sauna?

Look for a stove with stones made to take ladled water and a range in cubic feet that covers your room. A firebox that burns the wood cleanly and a glass door to watch the fire are good signs too. Sauna owners say purpose built stoves have worked well for them and bring the room up to temperature faster.

Can I load the stove from outside the sauna?

Yes, the Legend from Harvia and the Hive Wood and the Hive Flow from HUUM offer versions for loading from the next room or outside. Their longer firebox sits in the sauna wall, so the fire door opens on the other side and the firewood stays out of the hot room. Follow the manual for the wall opening.

Can I use a wood burning stove in a barrel sauna?

Yes, and HUUM listings offer a barrel sauna chimney kit alongside ceiling and wall kits. Match the stove's range to the barrel's volume in cubic feet. A narrow body leaves more floor space. For distances to the wood walls, follow the manual.

What size wood burning sauna stove do I need?

Multiply length, width and height in feet, then choose a stove whose cubic feet range covers your room. Options start around 212 cubic feet and reach club rooms above 2000 cubic feet. The kW size is the listing label. Call us with your measurements and we will talk it through.

Can you pour water on a wood burning sauna stove?

Yes, ladle a little water onto the hot stones for steam, called löyly in Finnish. These stoves hold about 88 to 572 pounds of stones made for the job. More stone gives softer steam that lasts. Add stones by the box on the listing page.
