Lexington Hearth brings the character of old timber to the fireplace without using a wood mantel. Made in Lexington, Kentucky, these cast pieces are painted by hand to bring out the original grain and marks. You can choose a rustic beam mantel, a lighter floating shelf, or a cleaner modern look. Start with the kind that suits your room, then compare the faux wood mantels and other finishes below.

What Lexington Hearth makes

The maker casts its timber profiles from molds of real beams in Burncrete, its patented non-combustible mix. The maker calls the line its Bluegrass collection. Each casting is hand-painted by artists so wood grain, saw marks, cracks and knots show through. These mantels are made in the USA and certified non-combustible. Browse our Fireplace Mantels hub to compare other makers. If you are choosing the firebox too, explore all fireplaces or focus on indoor fireplaces.

The kinds of mantels and trim

The rustic beam mantels range from hand hewn faces and rough cut cedar with circular saw marks to rounded half log shapes and plain beams. A heavier face suits a great room or cabin. A lighter profile gives a narrower fireplace wall less bulk.

The floating mantel shelves carry cabin log, barn timber and old growth timber textures in shallower shapes. A limestone look shelf offers rough edges and light neutral colors instead. Each mantel shelf floats on a hidden steel bracket, so there are no corbels to fit. Compare these with other brands on our Fireplace Mantel Shelves page.

The slim modern shelf has a smooth concrete look and a face only 3 inches tall. It and the floating profiles suit linear electric fireplaces. For a more formal room, the painted period style adds gentle curves, small beads and dentil blocks beneath the shelf.

Cast wall boards carry the rough sawn barn wood look around the fireplace. Decorative bracket trim is an accessory in black or bronze that wraps around a matching beam profile to hide an extension or corner joint, or simply add a metal strap detail. It is separate from the steel mounting bracket.

Which fireplace these mantels go over

These mantels can go above gas fireplaces, which push heat up the wall, electric fireplaces, which usually allow a closer shelf, and wood burning fireplaces, which generally need the most room above the opening. The fireplace manual and local code set the clearance. Read our guide to non combustible fireplace mantels before choosing the height.

How to choose your mantel

Choose the look first, then measure the fireplace and wall. Most lengths run from 48 to 72 inches, with some up to 84 inches. Next, pick the options on the product page for length and color. You can compare Lexington Hearth fireplace mantels piece by piece on the line page. Expect small differences in color and size from the photos because each piece is cast and hand-painted.

Your mantel questions

What are Lexington Hearth mantels made of?

The timber profiles are cast from molds of real old beams in Burncrete, the maker's patented non-combustible mix. Artists paint them by hand to bring out grain, saw marks, cracks and knots. Made in Lexington, Kentucky, these mantels are certified non-combustible, not wood or foam.

What clearance does a Lexington Hearth mantel need?

The material will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Heat still needs room, though. The fireplace manual and local code set the distance above the firebox. Gas, electric and wood units have their own clearance diagrams.

How do Lexington Hearth mantels attach to the wall?

A steel mounting bracket, screws and a touch up kit come with each mantel. The bracket screws into wall studs, and the mantel slides over the bracket. Hanging takes two people. The largest beam weighs over 200 pounds and needs its heavy duty bracket secured to four studs. The maker provides an installation video.

Can I use a Lexington Hearth mantel outdoors?

Every piece on this page is listed for indoor use. The material itself will not burn, but that does not make it rated for weather. Before planning one for a covered porch or outdoor fireplace, call us and we will talk it through.

Can I get a Lexington Hearth mantel in a custom length or color?

Almost every piece allows custom colors and lengths from 36 to 72 inches. Colors can match a photo or sample. The painted period style allows custom colors only. Two foot extensions and corner pieces create longer or wrap around runs, with bracket trim hiding seams. Call us with your wall width to discuss a Lexington Hearth mantel.
