A vented gas fireplace insert turns your existing masonry fireplace into a sealed gas fire behind a glass front. Also called a direct vent gas fireplace insert, it brings in outside air and sends exhaust up the existing chimney without using room air. Choose from seven inserts: three from Empire Comfort Systems, three from Majestic and one from Superior. Compare size, fuel and the look of the flame and log set for your living room or den.

How a vented gas fireplace insert works and how to choose

A sealed pipe runs from the gas insert up your chimney. See our chimney liner and pipe options. Measure the opening’s width, height and depth, front and back. Check window size and surround dimensions, too.

Empire Comfort Systems offers a line in small, medium and large, a two-size line with tall flames wrapping the logs, and a line with a raised burner, ember glass and built-in lights. Majestic offers widths from 25 to 35 inches, split logs or hand painted logs, and lights beneath them with three brightness levels. The Superior DRI2000 comes in 27 and 32 inch sizes, fits your masonry or factory built fireplace, and has a built-in blower and battery backup.

Choose natural gas or propane. Check standing pilot or electronic ignition, remote control and wall switch options. Majestic’s battery backup or Empire’s standing pilot keeps the fire working during a power outage. A blower pushes heat into the room but needs household power.

Other ways to go

Consider vent-free inserts without a pipe where allowed, or new direct vent fireplaces framed into a wall. For an open fire, vented gas logs use an open damper and emphasize looks over heat.

FAQ

What does installing a vented gas fireplace insert involve?

A licensed installer brings a gas line to the old firebox and runs sealed pipe up the chimney and out the top. The insert slides in, and a surround covers the opening. Call us and we will talk the run through.

Natural gas or propane?

Use natural gas with a house gas line or propane from a tank. Every insert supports either fuel; most require a selection. Two come set for natural gas with a propane conversion kit available. Tell us your fuel when ordering.

Are vented gas fireplace inserts safe?

Yes. The glass seals the fire from the room. The chimney pipe brings in outside air and removes exhaust, taking some heat with it. Vent-free alternatives depend on local code. The glass gets hot, so keep children and pets back.
