DuraVent Model BV Oval Attic Insulation Shield: keeps attic insulation out of the wall vent space
The DuraVent Model BV Oval Attic Insulation Shield is a barrier around the 4 inch oval vent where it enters the attic above a gas wall heater. It keeps loose insulation out of the ventilated wall space in a single story home or on the highest floor. Some local codes require it. It fastens atop the ceiling plate, with its lower edge resting on the plate’s spacers. Model BV is DuraVent’s Type B gas vent, the double wall pipe that carries the exhaust from a gas furnace, boiler, or water heater out of the house.
The oval vent has an aluminum inner pipe, a galvanized steel outer pipe, and air between them. Oval pipe and fittings normally need 1 inch of open air space from anything that can burn. The exception is 4 or 5 inch oval centered between 2 by 4 studs spaced 16 inches on center, using DuraVent spacers at each ceiling. Nothing else, including insulation, can occupy that space. Only straight pipe, with or without an oval tee, qualifies, and the centered pipe determines the remaining clearance. Need the plate below?
