What DuraVent Model BV vents

This B vent pipe is round Type B gas vent for draft hood equipped appliances such as gas-fired furnaces, boilers, water heaters and natural gas fireplaces. It is double-wall pipe with an aluminum inner wall and a galvanized steel outer wall. Warm exhaust rises naturally, while a draft hood admits room air at the appliance outlet. Approved appliances can share a properly sized vent. Round diameters span 3 to 30 inches, with sizing determined by appliance instructions and fuel gas sizing tables. Keep 1 inch of open air between the vent and anything that can burn, including wires and insulation. In Canada the 26 to 30 inch sizes need 2 inches.

Round and oval pipe

Round pipe in 3 to 8 inch sizes comes in lengths from 6 to 60 inches, with push-together joints secured by a thumb-pressed tab. Use adjustable pipe to fill gaps, never cut pipe or fittings. Oval pipe fits inside a stud wall above a wall furnace. Oval kits supply plates, with the vent kit also including pipe and an oval-to-round adapter. Oval Model BV is sold in the USA only.

Pieces from appliance to cap

Start with a connector or flexible connector, then use elbows for offsets and a tee or wye where the design calls for branches. Plan supports, firestops at floor and ceiling crossings, an attic insulation shield and a wall thimble for a wall crossing. At the roof, match flashing to the pitch and add a storm collar and approved cap. Roof top kits include the connector and roof pieces, while you add pipe on the page.

When you need another vent

A sealed gas fireplace uses DuraVent DirectVent Pro when its manual specifies that system. A wood stove needs chimney pipe such as DuraTech insulated chimney, while a pellet stove takes PelletVent Pro. Condensing gas appliances need a suitable system such as PolyPro venting. Its flexible liner can use old B vent as a sleeve. For a gas appliance venting into a masonry chimney, DuraFlex Aluminum liner joins this line through a flex adapter.

B vent questions

What is a B vent?

B vent has an aluminum inner pipe, a galvanized steel outer pipe and air between the walls. It serves approved natural gas or propane water heaters, furnaces, boilers and fireplaces. Their warm exhaust rises on its own, a process called natural draft. Model BV is DuraVent's B vent.

Is B vent the same as direct vent?

No, a B vent appliance uses room air for combustion, and its exhaust rises naturally. A sealed direct vent appliance sends exhaust through an inner pipe and draws outside air through the outer passage. Your appliance manual tells you which system it needs.

Is a B vent OK for a pellet stove?

No, a pellet stove needs pellet vent with a stainless steel inner pipe and sealed joints for its fan-pushed exhaust and fine ash. PelletVent Pro is a pellet vent system. Never connect a pellet stove directly to unlined DuraVent B vent.
