DuraVent DuraLiner Insulation Kit: a wrap for flex above the first flue tile

The DuraVent DuraLiner Insulation Kit is a blanket and mesh wrap for flexible chimney liner. It is required wherever a flex section extends above the first clay tile lining the old chimney. This is the 8 inch kit, with enough material for 5 feet of flex. You get a 1/2 inch thick, foil faced ProFoil ceramic blanket and a ProMesh stainless steel sleeve. The blanket goes around the flex, and the mesh covers it. Foil tape and band clamps are sold separately. With this insulation, the flex is listed to touch the masonry. Bare flex needs a 1 inch gap.

DuraLiner is DuraVent’s factory insulated double wall pipe for relining a masonry chimney that vents a wood, pellet, coal, oil, or gas appliance. Its rigid pipe does not need this kit. The flexible sections handle the bend past the smoke shelf and old damper, which is removed first. Flex below the first flue tile does not require insulation, but DuraVent recommends wrapping every flex section for draft and safety. Leaving flex bare? See the DuraVent DuraLiner Spacer ring. The DuraVent DuraLiner Insulation Kit ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

Applications

DuraLiner is a high-temperature, insulated double-wall masonry relining system for use with appliances fueled by gas, pellet, oil, wood, or coal. It safely protects masonry chimneys from the damaging effects of flue product condensation.

Materials and Construction

.016″ 304 stainless steel inner liner. Rigid relining pipe: double-walled with 304 stainless steel inner and galvalume outer. Factory insulated between inner and outer walls. DuraLiner Rigid Pipe in round or oval, is constructed with built-in fittings and pre-drilled holes (stainless steel rivets included). Round 5″ DuraLiner rigid pipe is constructed with built-in twist-lock and pre-drilled holes.

Clearances

Rigid double wall: 0″ clearance between the liner and masonry and 0″ clearance between the masonry and combustibles. DuraLiner Flex: 1″ clearance to masonry. Zero clearance with insulation.

Instructions

Typical Installation

Refer to our Typical Installation drawings to select the appropriate component parts for your installation

  • The inner pipe diameter should match the outlet size of the appliance.
  • Check the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions for any venting restrictions.
  • Be fire safe! Follow local building codes and have your venting system inspected.

3 DuraTech or DuraPlus Chimney
4 Tee with Removeable Snout
5 DuraLiner – flexible length
6 Masonry Thimble w/ Slip Connector
7 Slip Connector and Hanger

Planning Your Installation:

  1. Refer to the Typical Installations for the needed parts for installation.
  2. The size of the liner should match the outlet size on the appliance.
  3. Determine use of round or oval pipe based onthe interior shape of the chimney.
  4. Determine the length of liner needed. Subtract 1 1/2″ overlap per joint on pipe. When using Extend-A-Cap kit, liner must extend 6″ above top of the masonry surface.
  5. Make sure the top of the masonry chimney has a leveled surface to insure a proper fit for the Extend-A-Cap or Transition Anchor Plate and to provide a secure, leak-proof installation.
  6. If a free-standing appliance is used, select the vent or stovepipe pieces to connect from the appliance to the liner. Refer to installation instructions.
  7. For Installations using a Transition Anchor Plate, refer to the DuraTech, DuraPlus, or DuraPlus HTC catalog section or installation instructions for proper parts and installation.
  8. Important! Check to be sure the installation complies with all local and national code requirements, including clearance to combustibles. Contact the local building inspector for permit requirements.

Design Recommendations

  • The following design recommendations are a general guideline to assist in the design and selection of liner components for your installation. Always follow DuraVent installation instructions enclosed with the cap or support box before installing your chimney system.
  • Before relining a chimney, it should be cleaned and inspected, by a certified chimney sweep, to verify the integrity of the mortar and masonry.
  • DuraLiner is approved for 0″ clearance between the liner and masonry and 0″ clearance between the masonry and combustibles.
  • DuraLiner is used for wood-burning appliances when zeroclearance or oval pipe is needed.
  • Refer to the appliance manufacturer for installation requirements affecting venting. Keep the vent path as straight as possible for best performance.

Restore Deteriorating Chimneys with DuraLiner
When a masonry chimney is damaged or has fallen down, it can be replaced with a safe, listed liner system or factory-built chimney. DuraLiner, when used with a Transition Anchor Plate and in combination with DuraTech, DuraPlus, or DuraPlus HTC Chimneys, replaces the damaged masonry chimney with a safe, efficient, and economical listed chimney system (DuraPlus HTC is listed for use in Canada). See Typical Installations for details.

FAQ

What is in the DuraLiner Insulation Kit?

One 5-foot length of 1/2-inch ProFoil insulation blanket and a 5-foot section of ProMesh wire mesh, sized for 8-inch DuraLiner flex. The blanket wraps the flexible liner and the mesh protects the blanket while the liner is lowered down the chimney. Buy one kit per 5 feet of flex you need to insulate.

When does the flexible liner have to be insulated?

Wherever flex runs above the first flue tile inside the masonry, and DuraVent recommends insulating all flex. Insulation is what earns the zero-clearance listing: uninsulated DuraLiner flex needs 1 inch to the masonry, insulated flex is listed at zero clearance to the masonry and zero from the masonry to combustibles under UL 1777, which matters most on exterior chimneys.

How is the insulation installed?

Trim the ProFoil so the flex end rings stay exposed, wrap it around the liner lengthwise and seal the seam with foil tape, keeping at least 1/2 inch of insulation all round. Slip the ProMesh over the wrapped liner, clamp one end with a stainless band clamp, pull it snug toward the other end and secure it with a band clamp or aluminum tape.

Does rigid DuraLiner need this kit too?

No. Rigid DuraLiner pipe is double-wall and insulated at the factory, which is why it is listed at 0 inch clearance straight out of the box. The kit is only for the flexible lengths used to snake past a smoke shelf, damper or offset. Rigid and flex lengths and the top-plate kits are in the DuraLiner category.

Which fuels can an insulated flex liner serve?

DuraLiner is listed for gas, pellet, oil, wood and coal appliances, and the insulation also improves draft and reduces condensation on any of them. Have the chimney inspected and cleaned by a certified sweep before relining, match the liner to the appliance outlet, and join sections with the supplied stainless pop rivets rather than screws.
