Does the Napoleon Elevation X 42 need a chimney?
No. The Elevation X 42 is a direct vent gas fireplace, so it vents directly through an exterior wall or the roof using a sealed coaxial pipe. No masonry chimney is required, which also keeps all combustion air outside your living space.
Will the Elevation X 42 work during a power outage?
Yes, you can still have a fire. The electronic ignition includes a battery backup, so the flame can be lit when household power is out. The internal heat-circulating blower does need electricity, so it will resume once power is restored.
How much gas does the Elevation X 42 use?
At its maximum input of 45,000 BTU, it burns about 0.45 therms of natural gas per hour — roughly 60 to 70 cents per hour at typical U.S. gas rates, and less when turned down with the flame-height control.
What are the framing dimensions for the Elevation X 42?
Minimum framing is 45.75 in wide, 47.75 in high, and 22.25 in deep. The unit itself measures 44.62 x 47.56 x 22.50 in with a 36.44 x 28.94 in viewing area. Always confirm against the installation manual in the Catalogs and Manuals tab before framing.
Can the Elevation X 42 heat a large living room?
With 45,000 BTU of output and an included internal blower, it is one of the stronger heaters in Napoleon’s lineup and is well suited as a zone heater for large, open living areas. Actual coverage depends on ceiling height, insulation, and climate.
Is the Elevation X 42 natural gas or propane?
This model (EX42NTEL) ships configured for natural gas. If your home runs on propane, contact us before ordering and we will confirm the correct conversion option for this fireplace, backed by Napoleon’s President’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Can the Elevation X 42 be installed on an interior wall?
Yes. Because direct vent pipe can run vertically through the roof as well as horizontally, the Elevation X 42 is not limited to exterior walls — your installer just needs a code-compliant vent route from the fireplace to outside.

- By signing the delivery receipt without noting any damage or missing items, you confirm that your order arrived complete and in excellent condition.
- Record any damage or missing pieces directly on the delivery receipt.
- Do not discard damaged item(s) or any original packaging. For severe damage, write “Refused due to damage” on the delivery receipt and contact us immediately.
- Report any damage within two business days, including delivery details and photos showing the issue
- Damaged item(s) must be returned within 30 days. Failure to return them will result in a charge to the original payment method.
