Monessen Fortress: one gas fire for the living room and patio
The Monessen Fortress is a see through direct vent gas fireplace set in an outside wall. See through means one side faces the living room and the other faces the patio. It is 36 inches wide, with a 36 by 30 inch window on each side. The included log set gives it a traditional wood fire look. The glass does not mirror the room, so reflections do not compete with the flames. Its stainless steel exterior is built for weather.
Order it for natural gas or propane. Direct vent means a sealed pipe runs to the outside. It brings in air for the fire and carries the exhaust out, so the fire never uses the air in your room. IntelliFire Touch ignition lights it with a button, and a battery backup keeps it running when the power is out. It puts out up to 56,000 BTU, enough to warm both sides. A touchscreen remote comes with it. On the page you pick the fuel and the brick interior panels, and you can add a wall switch or a Wi-Fi module. Comparing indoor and outdoor models? FAQ
What grade of stainless steel faces the weather?
The exterior is 316 marine-grade stainless steel, an alloy chosen for corrosion resistance beyond what ordinary stainless offers, and it stays rust-resistant even in the harshest conditions. Few outdoor gas fireplaces carry that specification, and it is why the outdoor half of this fireplace can face rain, humidity, and hard winters year after year without the finish giving way.
Why is the glass non-reflective?
So the fire is what you see. Ordinary fireplace glass can mirror lamps, windows, and the room itself, and those reflections compete with the flames. The Fortress uses non-reflective glass across its expansive viewing area, which keeps the view clean and the fire vivid from either side. It is one of the quiet details behind what Monessen calls the ultimate in traditional luxury design.
Does the Fortress offer ambiance on nights too warm for a fire?
Yes, through its accent lighting. The lights illuminate the fireplace interior and enhance the effect of the flames when the burner is running, and they also work entirely on their own, so the firebox glows as a lit architectural feature with no fire at all. On a mild evening you still get a finished, inviting centerpiece, indoors and out.
Is a log set included with this fireplace?
Yes. An 8-piece gas log set comes already included, the same set shown in the product images, so the traditional hearth look is complete out of the box rather than a separate line on the quote. Stacked in the 30-inch-tall firebox, the logs give the 56,000 BTU natural gas flames an authentic bed to rise from.
What is the battery backup for?
It makes the ignition independent of household electricity. The IntelliFire Touch system runs the burner in daily use, and the built-in battery backup means the fireplace can still be lit if the electrical supply is interrupted, a practical safeguard on an appliance you may be counting on for warmth in rough weather. No generator, no extension cord, just a fire that starts.
What style is the Fortress built around?
Traditional luxury. Where much of the see-through market chases a low, linear ribbon of flame, the Fortress keeps classic hearth proportions and an authentic, established look, with details chosen for warmth rather than minimalism. That traditional style fits a surprising variety of spaces, which is exactly what was intended for a fireplace meant to be lived with, not just looked at.
Can the firebox interior be customized?
Yes. The Fortress offers multiple interior brick options, so the backdrop behind the included log set can be chosen to suit the architecture around it. Because the interior shows on both faces, the brick you select becomes part of the finished look on each side, and picking it deliberately is one of the easiest ways to make the fireplace feel designed rather than installed.
