Why reline an old chimney?

An oversized flue cools smoke, weakening draft and encouraging creosote. Cracked clay tiles are another reason for chimney relining. Without a masonry chimney, use class A chimney pipe to build a new one.

Which liner do you need?

A stainless steel chimney liner from DuraFlex stainless steel comes in kits or single lengths. Choose basic grade for wood, oil or non-condensing gas, higher grade for coal or mixed fuels, or heavy-duty grade for several bends. A chimney liner kit pairs a flexible chimney liner with finishing pieces.

For a chimney liner for wood stove or insert use, DuraLiner offers factory-insulated rigid round and oval sections, with flex pieces for the damper. DuraFlex aluminum is lighter, for natural-draft gas appliances only, never wood, pellets, oil or coal.

Insulation and finishing pieces

For a flexible liner, the chimney liner insulation kit contains a foil-faced wrap, a mesh sleeve that holds it on and tape. An insulated liner keeps smoke hotter, which means better draft and less creosote. Most wood installations need insulation to pass inspection, so ask your sweep or inspector.

For wood burning fireplace inserts and wood stoves, the top plate holds the liner at the top of the chimney. The cap keeps rain out. The connector or tee with a clean-out joins the liner to the appliance. The insert adapter fits an insert with a flat outlet. The dedicated factory-built fireplace reline kit requires a chimney at least 8 inches inside.

Pellet stoves and gas appliances

Pellet stove pipe has its own reline kit and flexible pipe. The aluminum liner ties into B vent pipe with an adapter where the vent for a gas water heater or furnace meets the chimney.

FAQ

What is a chimney liner?

It is a stainless steel pipe running from the chimney top to your appliance, with a cap and connector. It gives smoke a correctly sized path and shields brick and clay tiles from gases and moisture. Aluminum serves natural-draft gas appliances only.

Do I really need a chimney liner?

Usually, yes. An oversized old flue can weaken draft, and cracked tiles let moisture reach the brick. Inserts commonly need relining, as do gas appliances in oversized flues. Ask a chimney sweep to check whether your existing chimney is sound and lined.

What size chimney liner do I need?

Match the appliance outlet diameter, usually 6 inches for wood stoves and inserts. Check the flue interior for insulation room. For length, lower a weighted string from the chimney top to the appliance connection and allow a little extra.
