What class A chimney pipe means

This all-fuel, double wall chimney pipe has two walls with insulation between them to keep the outside cooler and the flue hot for draft. Maintain 2 inches of clearance to combustibles, including wood framing. People call it class A stove pipe, but single wall stove pipe and double wall stove pipe are room connectors. Neither can pass through a ceiling.

Choose your size family

Choose DuraTech 5 to 8 inch stainless steel chimney pipe for wood stoves. The DuraTech 10 to 24 inch family serves large fireplaces, furnaces, boilers and pizza ovens, with a stainless or coated steel outer wall.

The pieces your chimney needs

Through the ceiling, use pipe lengths, a ceiling support box, attic insulation shield, firestop radiation shield at each floor, roof flashing, storm collar and chimney cap. For a through-the-wall installation, use a wall thimble, tee with clean-out, tee support bracket and wall straps, then flashing, collar and cap. An elbow kit helps route pipe around framing. A roof brace supports pipe over 4 feet above the roof. For bundled runs, choose a chimney pipe kit or triple wall chimney kits with three walls and an air space.

Using an existing chimney

For wood stoves venting into existing masonry, look at a chimney liner instead of a new metal chimney.

Frequently asked questions

What is class A chimney pipe?

It is insulated metal pipe tested for any fuel, including wood. The wood stove sizes have two stainless steel walls with insulation between them. It takes over at the ceiling or wall, with 2 inches of clearance to wood framing.

What size chimney pipe do I need for a wood stove?

Use class A chimney pipe matching your stove outlet, usually 6 inch. Never go smaller: that reduces draft. The 5 to 8 inch family covers wood stoves. Check your manual for the size.

How tall does the chimney need to be above the roof?

Set the cap at least 3 feet above the roof exit and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet. Above 4 feet, add a roof brace. Check your stove manual and local code for total height.

Can I mix class A chimney pipe brands?

No. Keep every class A chimney pipe component from the ceiling or wall to the cap in the same DuraTech line. The chimney is tested as one system. The black stove pipe below it is a separate connector.
