Controls and accessories sold on their own

Every Detroit Radiant heater page lets you add the matching controls and mounting hardware to the cart. This collection sells the same parts separately, for the times the count is not one per heater: three heaters on one transformer and one thermostat, a spare relay kit, or a controller ordered after the heaters went in. Detroit Radiant Products makes these for the DSC, DSR and DSRF gas heaters and the ELD and ELX electric heaters.

How the gas heater controls fit together

The DSC box heater runs its controls on 24 volts, so it needs a transformer that is not in the box: the 40 VA transformer runs up to two DSC heaters and the 96 VA transformer up to five. The DSR and DSRF tube heaters plug into 120 volts and make their own 24 volts, so a single tube heater needs no transformer. When two or more heaters share one thermostat or controller, each heater needs an external relay kit and the thermostat needs its own transformer. Single stage controllers and thermostats are for the DSCS; two stage controllers and thermostats are for the DSCD and the tube heaters, which have a high and a low fire. Outdoors, Detroit Radiant recommends a switch or timer over a thermostat, which may never be satisfied in open air.

Electric heater controls

The ELD and ELX are shipped without a control; the installer supplies a switch, timer, thermostat or a variable heat controller sized to the amps, plus a contactor when the load is larger than the control can switch. The line voltage thermostats, the MWC and SMWC variable controllers and the contactor enclosures here cover the usual cases; an electrician picks the one that matches the circuit.

Your questions answered

Do I need a transformer for a tube heater?

Not for one heater on its own controller; the DSR and DSRF make their own 24 volts. You need a transformer, one per thermostat, when several heaters are run from one thermostat, and a relay kit for each heater.

Which controller for a DSCD or a tube heater?

A two stage one, so you can run high or low fire: the TH-DSTS1 for one zone, the TH-DSTS2 for two zones, or the TH-T2-4H toggle switch with a four hour timer.
