Primo Oval Large Kamado: a ceramic charcoal grill head for your table or island

The Primo Oval Large Kamado is an oval ceramic charcoal grill for a table or island, or a stand you already own. A kamado is a charcoal grill with thick ceramic walls that hold heat and moisture, so one grill can sear, roast, bake, and smoke. Its 300 square inches of cooking space hold about twelve burgers or eight racks of ribs. The grill head weighs 152 pounds. Primo is the only ceramic grill made in the USA, built by Empire Comfort Systems in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Kamado on this page means the ceramic grill head alone, with no stand, side tables, or tools. The included stainless steel cooking grates come in two halves. The oval shape lets you sear over coals at one end and roast or smoke at the other. Heat deflectors and a drip pan are not included. On this page, you can add a stand, heat deflector plates with racks for roasting or smoking, and a half drip pan. Want the stand and starter tools included? See the Primo Oval Large All-In-One package. The Primo Oval Large Kamado ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ

What is included with the Kamado-only Large?

This listing is the grill head itself: the ceramic body with reversible cooking grates, the 5-position cast aluminum damper top, lower air control slider and easy-lift hinge. A stand, side tables, ash tool, grate lifter and heat deflectors are not in the box at this price; the Change Pkg Configuration and Optional (Recommended) selectors on the page let you add them.

How do I turn it into an All-In-One or put it on a cart?

Pick the configuration on the selector above the Add to Cart button. All in One Pkg adds the cradle with side tables and the starter accessories, On Countertop with Cypress Table sets the grill in an unfinished cypress table with locking casters, and the base with basket and stainless side shelves gives you a rolling metal cart. Each choice updates the price on the page.

Do I need heat deflectors for smoking?

For indirect cooking, meaning baking, roasting or low-and-slow smoking, the Quick Start Guide says the heat deflector plates and racks are required. They are not part of the grill-head purchase, so add them, and the drip pan that catches fat during long cooks, through the Optional (Recommended) selector before checkout. For direct grilling and searing you need nothing extra.

What are the cooking area and capacity?

The cooking grid is 300 square inches, 15 by 22 inches, with an optional rack system adding 195 square inches. Primo lists capacity as six whole chickens, one whole turkey, eight steaks, twelve burgers, eight racks of ribs or eight ears of corn, and the grill body weighs 152 pounds.

How much space does it need?

The spec sheet calls for a minimum of 2 inches of clearance around the outside of the grill and 12 inches behind it so the dome can open properly. The grill runs from 151 F to over 850 F, so place it on a stable, level surface and follow the Quick Start Guide and your local codes for anything closer to structures.

What kind of charcoal should I use?

Primo’s guide is built around 100 percent natural lump charcoal, and it says never to use lighter fluid or any combustible liquid because the ceramic absorbs it and taints food. Fill the firebox for searing or smoking sessions and use about half for two-zone cooks. Leftover charcoal relights two or three times: stir it with the ash tool so ash falls through the fire grate, then add roughly 30 percent fresh lump. Browse all sizes in the Primo grill range.
