DuraVent DuraTech Elbow Kit: two bends to take the chimney around framing
The DuraVent DuraTech Elbow Kit is a pair of chimney elbows with a support strap. One elbow turns the chimney around a rafter or joist. The other brings it upright again. DuraTech is DuraVent’s double wall chimney, an insulated pipe with a 1 inch wall that takes over from the stovepipe at the ceiling or wall and runs up past the roof. Choose a matching 5, 6, 7, or 8 inch diameter and a fixed 15 or 30 degree angle. Each elbow swivels to face the needed direction. Stainless steel is available in every size, and galvalume steel in 6 to 8 inch sizes.
Pipe between the elbows is sold separately. More than one pipe length between them needs a second strap. Sections twist together without screws or bands, though a locking band is optional. A straight chimney needs at least 10 to 15 feet above the stove outlet. The cap must stand 3 feet above the roof exit and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet. Need another support strap? See the DuraVent DuraTech Adjustable Elbow Strap. The DuraVent DuraTech Elbow Kit ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
What is in the DuraTech Elbow Kit, and how do I choose the angle and diameter?
You get two matching elbows and one Elbow Strap. On the page, pick the diameter (5 to 8 inches) first, then the outer-wall finish and angle: stainless (SS) in 15 or 30 degrees, or galvalume (GA) in 15 or 30 degrees for 6 to 8 inch sizes. The listed price is the 5-inch stainless 15-degree pair; the other combinations show their price on the selector.
When do I need an elbow kit on a DuraTech chimney?
Only when something is in the way: rafters, a ridgepole or joists. One elbow starts the offset and the second returns the chimney to vertical, which is why they come as a pair. DuraTech allows a maximum of two offsets (four elbows) in one installation, and the straighter the chimney the better the draft and the less creosote it collects.
Can I combine elbows to make a 45 or 90 degree offset?
No. UL 103 does not permit offsets greater than 30 degrees in the United States, and DuraTech elbows are fixed at 15 or 30 degrees. The 360-degree swivel at the base only lets you point the offset in any direction; it does not change the angle. Use the offset table in the DuraTech catalog to see how much horizontal distance each pair gives.
How is the offset supported?
Each offset needs at least one Elbow Strap, which is why one is in the kit. If the chimney run between the two elbows is longer than about 3 feet, add a second Elbow Strap around the middle of that section. Straps or a Tee Support carry the weight of the pipe above so the elbows are not loaded; secure straps to framing with the nails or wood screws the manual specifies.
Do elbows change how much chimney height I need?
Yes. DuraVent’s planning guide says an installation with elbows or a tee needs roughly 30 to 60 percent more height than a straight chimney to draft properly, on top of the normal 10 to 15 foot minimum above the appliance outlet. Elbows are joined with the same twist-lock as the pipe; screws are optional and must not penetrate the inner wall.
Will these elbows work with DuraPlus or DuraChimney pipe?
No. This kit fits 5 to 8 inch DuraTech only; DuraVent does not allow mixing DuraTech, DuraPlus and DuraChimney components. Choose stainless if the chimney is exposed outdoors or you want it to match stainless pipe, and note the stainless outer wall is required for installations in Canada. DuraTech keeps its 2-inch clearance to combustibles through the elbows.
