Monessen Stony Creek: detailed gas logs with tall yellow flames
The Monessen Stony Creek is a vent free gas log set for the fireplace you already have. It comes 18, 24, or 30 inches wide. Pick the size on the page. The logs are cast from heat resistant cement with sharp detail. The black Natural Blaze burner makes tall yellow flames over a glowing ember bed. It is dual rated, so it can also go in a vented fireplace with the damper open. It puts out up to 37,000 BTU. It heats up to 1,850 square feet.
Order it for natural gas or propane. Vent free means it needs no chimney or vent pipe at all, and nearly all the heat stays in the room. Check your local code first, since some areas restrict vent free heaters. The price is for the logs. The burner is a required pick on the page, in millivolt or IPI. On the page you pick the size, the fuel, and the burner ignition. Millivolt means it has a standing pilot and needs no electricity, so it keeps working when the power is out. IPI means intermittent pilot ignition: it lights the pilot only when you turn the fire on, so no gas burns while the fire is off. Pick one on the page. You can add a hand held on and off remote or a touchscreen remote. Comparing log styles? See the Monessen Berkley Oak Refractory gas log set. FAQ
What is the Stony Creek Enhancement Kit?
It is a dedicated add-on Monessen documents for this log set: SC18-EK fits the 18-inch version, and SC2430-EK serves the 24 and 30-inch sets. The kit gives you a factory-matched way to add to the standard pieces, and its instructions are published right alongside the Stony Creek log placement sheet in the official literature, so it installs as part of the same system.
Will these logs fit a firebox that narrows toward the back?
That taper is expected. The spec lists rear widths separately from front widths: the 18-inch millivolt set needs just 18 inches across the back wall against 26 up front, and even the 30-inch versions ask for 25-1/4 inches at the rear. As long as your firebox meets both measurements, the trapezoid footprint of a masonry firebox is exactly what this set anticipates.
What is the black base the logs sit on?
That is the Natural Blaze burner, and the black finish is deliberate: Monessen styled it to blend into the hearth so attention goes to the fire rather than the hardware. It is the component that actually produces the flames, sending them up through the stacked logs, and it is remote ready if you decide to add a compatible control later on.
What sets the Stony Creek apart from Monessen's other refractory sets?
Its rating is the headline: Monessen’s description calls the Stony Creek dual rated, cleared for vented as well as vent-free installation, a claim the Highland Oak and Beachcomber pages do not make. Otherwise it keeps the family strengths of refractory cement construction, the Natural Blaze burner, and three sizes. Compare the whole range in our gas fireplace log sets collection.
What does remote ready mean on the spec sheet?
It means the controls are set up to accept a Monessen remote but do not include one, leaving the choice to you. Documented options for this set start with the RCB basic on-off handheld, and the fire operates perfectly well with no remote at all. Nothing has to be decided at order time, since a control can be added whenever you want one.
Does anything monitor the burner while it runs?
With the intermittent pilot option, yes. That version runs on IntelliFire Plus, which Monessen describes as monitoring safe performance throughout operation on top of managing the pilot electronically. It is one of the practical reasons to consider IPI when configuring the set; the millivolt version keeps things simpler and manual instead, without the electronic oversight layer.
Can a shallow firebox still take these logs?
Down to a point. Every size of this set, in either ignition, calls for at least 13 inches of depth, so measure the firebox floor from front to back before ordering. The 17-inch opening height requirement applies across the run as well. If both of those check out, the only question left is matching front and rear widths to your chosen size.
