San Juan Fire Pit in Corten Steel: a low linear fire pit that weathers to a rich rust
The Outdoor Plus San Juan fire pit in Corten steel is a long, low gas fire pit in five lengths from 48 to 96 inches, handmade in the USA. Corten forms its own protective rust-colored skin outdoors, deepening from orange to brown, and a swinging door in the body hides a propane tank inside the pit.
Order it for natural gas or propane. Light it with a match, or add electronic ignition and start it with a button. The burner, pan, hose, fittings, and tank door are included; a key valve, cover, stainless lid, wind guard, and fire glass are optional. Prefer a finish that stays the same? See the stainless steel San Juan. The Corten San Juan fire pit ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
Why would I want a fire pit that rusts?
Because Corten rust is armor, not decay. The San Juan Corten weathers into a stable oxide skin — burnt orange deepening toward umber — that then protects the steel beneath indefinitely. Expect some rusty runoff onto pale paving while the patina forms; gravel or a mat handles the first season.
Is there really a 96-inch version?
There is — the Corten San Juan runs 48, 60, 72, 84, and 96 inches (OPT-SANJCS48 through OPT-SANJCS96). Its low-slung profile keeps even the eight-foot version from dominating sight lines, which is exactly why designers reach for it on big terraces.
What happens with the propane tank?
It disappears. A concealed tank compartment with an access door is built into the San Juan body, so propane users get a clean install with nothing parked beside the fire. Natural gas builds plumb straight to the line and leave the compartment as storage-free space.
How far from the house should it sit?
Honor the spec sheet clearances first, then the common ten-foot guideline. Gas means the Corten San Juan throws no embers at your eaves, so many codes allow it nearer than wood fire — pergolas, overhangs, and siding still deserve their buffer.
Are backyard fire pits allowed in most towns?
Gas ones, almost universally — no smoke, no burn-day restrictions, no ember risk. The San Juan usually needs nothing beyond proper gas hookup and clearances, though HOAs and local codes get the final word. Our gas fire pit category shows the range of formats that pass easily.
How is the fire put out?
Instantly, at the valve — turn it closed and the San Juan goes dark. There is no ash to rake and no coals to soak, and the Corten shell can simply cool on its own schedule. That two-second shutdown is the nightly luxury of gas.
Should I cover it, or can it take the rain?
Let it rain — wet-dry cycling is literally how the San Juan Corten finish matures, and covering it too much slows an even patina. Once the color has stabilized, a cover is fine for keeping leaves and water out of the burner pan between uses.
