DuraTech chimney pipe: where it starts

This insulated chimney pipe belongs to the class A chimney pipe family. It is an all-fuel chimney system for appliances that burn wood, coal, oil or gas, including stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, boilers and water heaters, with one appliance per chimney, and the appliance or factory built fireplace maker must approve this line when the chimney starts on an anchor plate. Keep 2 inches of clearance to combustibles, leaving that space open to air. Choose stainless steel in 5 to 8 inch sizes or galvalume in 6 to 8 inch, with stainless steel for weather exposure.

Choose a support box for your flat or cathedral ceiling. Ceiling support boxes carry the chimney and accept DuraBlack single wall stove pipe or DVL double-wall stove pipe through their adapters. Stove pipe stays inside the room and never passes through a ceiling or wall. Our stove pipe and chimney pipe collection shows the other lines.

The pieces for your chimney route

Fixed lengths run from 6 to 60 inches and twist together without screws, with each joint taking 1 1/4 inches off the run. A locking band is optional for an outdoor stretch exposed to wind or when the local inspector asks for one. An adjustable length fills a gap in your installation but cannot carry weight. An elbow kit steps around framing, while a wall thimble lets chimney pipe cross a wall to a supported tee outside. Browse wood stove chimney kit options for kits and elbows.

Use shields to keep attic insulation off the chimney and protect floor openings. At the roof, choose flashing for the pitch, a storm collar and a roof bracket for runs over 5 feet above it. Finish with the required chimney cap and add a spark arrestor screen where needed. A chase needs top flashing and an air intake below.

Choose the right chimney line

The ready made chimney kits use triple wall DuraVent DuraPlus, whose parts do not fit this double-wall insulated system. For bigger appliances, see DuraTech 10 to 24 inch. A transition anchor plate carries this chimney above DuraLiner in a shortened masonry chimney.

Common chimney questions

What is DuraTech chimney pipe?

It is DuraVent's double-wall insulated chimney that takes over from stove pipe at the ceiling or wall. Insulation between the stainless steel inner wall and the outer wall keeps heat inside and supports draft. It needs 2 inches of clearance to anything that burns.

What is the 3-2-10 rule for a chimney?

The cap must stand at least 3 feet above the roof exit. It must also stand 2 feet above anything within 10 feet, including a ridge or dormer. Add a roof bracket above 5 feet. Your stove manual and local code may require more.

What size DuraTech chimney pipe do I need for a wood stove?

Match the stove outlet unless its maker allows a smaller diameter. Most stoves use 6 inch, followed by 8 inch. Send us the appliance model and a sketch of the run and we will write the DuraTech parts list.
