Triple wall or double wall class A?

Three steel walls surround a ceramic blanket and an air space. Both this line and double wall class A chimney pipe need 2 inches of clearance to combustibles. Double wall is slimmer. Triple wall needs a bigger hole but offers ready-made kits.

It is chimney pipe, not stove pipe

Your triple wall chimney pipe starts at the ceiling or wall. Inside the room, use single wall pipe or double wall stove pipe. The adapter joining them is here too.

The kits

The through the ceiling kit provides a ceiling support box and roof parts. The through the wall kit adds a thimble, tee and wall supports for a through-the-wall installation. Both need added pipe lengths. The manufactured home kit includes two 24 inch lengths. An elbow kit helps you route around framing. Compare all our wood stove chimney kits.

The single pieces

The DuraPlus line includes ceiling supports, flashing, a chimney cap, shields and wall straps. A base plate lets the chimney start straight off a zero clearance fireplace. Choose flashing for your roof pitch and material. A chimney standing more than 4 feet above the roof needs an extended roof bracket.

Into an existing chimney instead

For wood stoves venting into existing masonry, look at chimney liners instead of a new metal chimney.

FAQ

Why use triple wall stove pipe instead of double wall?

Both are class A and need 2 inches to combustibles. Triple wall has three walls, a ceramic blanket and an air space. Choose it for ready-made kits. Double wall has solid insulation and is slimmer for tighter spaces.

How much clearance does triple wall stove pipe need?

The triple wall stove pipe clearance is 2 inches to combustibles, including wood framing, just as with double wall class A. The black connector inside the room needs more space: 18 inches for single wall and 6 inches for double wall. Follow the manual.

Does triple wall pipe get hot on the outside?

It is designed to stay cool outside while the ceramic blanket and air space keep heat in the flue for strong draft. The outer wall still warms, so keep the required 2 inches of clearance and use attic and floor shields.

Can I run triple wall chimney pipe from the stove all the way up?

Normally, use stove pipe inside the room, then triple wall stove pipe at the ceiling support box or wall thimble, joined by an adapter. Class A can run throughout a tight enclosed chase, but follow the stove manual and your inspector’s decision.
