Detroit Radiant DSRL-30 Tube Heater: even gas heat for a long covered patio
The Detroit Radiant DSRL-30 Tube Heater is a gas heater for long covered patios and driving range tee lines. A burner heats black coated aluminized steel tubes to spread warmth evenly. It is 16 feet 4 inches long and weighs 170 pounds. It hangs from a ceiling or canopy, 9 to 16 feet high. It is outdoors only: exhaust disperses in open air, so no vent pipe is needed. It runs on a piped gas line, natural gas or propane, so there is no tank to refill. Detroit Radiant Products is a family owned company founded in 1955 that builds its heaters in Warren, Michigan.
Choose 65,000, 80,000, or 100,000 BTUs and your fuel type on this page. It warms about 26 by 12 feet. Two stage operation means it drops to low heat once the patio is warm, cycling less. Radiant heat warms people and surfaces directly, like sunshine, instead of warming the air, so it works outdoors. Warranty coverage is three years on components, five on tubes, and ten on the burner. The Detroit Radiant DSRL-30 Tube Heater ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
Is the DSRL vented or unvented?
Unvented. The DSR brochure lists CSA certification to ANSI Z83.26 for unvented outdoor use, for outdoor use only and not for indoor residential spaces. The exhaust simply disperses under the open patio or range canopy, so no vent run is needed; the vented sibling is the DSRF series.
What outputs are available?
65,000, 80,000 or 100,000 BTU per hour on the Heat Output selector, with low fires of 50,000, 52,000 and 65,000 thanks to the patented two stage operation. Natural gas at 3.5 inches or propane at 10 inches water column is chosen on the Fuel Type selector. The housing is 16 feet 4 inches with 28 feet of radiant tube.
How high and with what clearance?
9 to 16 feet per the brochure, at 0 or up to 30 degrees. Clearances at 0 degrees are 25 inches to the sides, 6 above and 60 below, rising to 77 below on the 100,000 BTU unit. The Accessories selector carries turnbuckles, Gripple cable, an intake extension and 2-point hanging bracket kits.
What power does it plug into?
120 volt, 60 Hz with a power cord standard and 24 volt controls, drawing 4.8 amps to start and 1.1 running. Hot surface ignition, pre- and post-purge and a self-diagnostic LED are standard. A hanging kit and a stainless flexible gas connector are included with the heater.
Why do driving ranges use it?
The description says the even heat pattern across the 16 foot span and the decorative modular grille make it the preferred heater for outdoor driving ranges, and the same applies to long restaurant patios. Low intensity tube heat covers a strip rather than a spot. See other ceiling patio heaters for shorter spans.
What is the warranty and shipping method?
3-5-10 years on components, tubes and burner per the Specifications tab. It weighs about 170 pounds, ships truckline only on a skid, and Detroit Radiant asks for installation by trained gas personnel and an annual inspection to keep coverage valid.
