Valcourt St-Laurent: a long, low window onto a wood fire
The Valcourt St-Laurent is a wood fireplace built for the look of the fire. Valcourt calls it an ambiance fireplace, which means it is built for the look and the sound of a big fire in one room, not to heat the whole house. Valcourt rates it for rooms under 1,000 square feet. Its long, low glass window is about 41 inches wide. It is a zero clearance fireplace, which means your builder frames it into a wall during construction or a renovation. A chimney runs up from it, so you do not need a masonry fireplace.
The door is a guillotine door: it slides straight up and out of the way. Both the door and the spark screen tuck under the hearth, with a handle you take off when you are done. Close the door for a clean steady fire, or open it and use the screen for the feel of an open fire. It burns dry, seasoned firewood. The contemporary molded brick panels that line the firebox come with it. You pick the finishing trim on the page. It is the strip that closes the gap between the fireplace and the wall around it, and it comes in a version for brick or stone or a version for tile. An outside air kit, which feeds the fire air from outdoors instead of from the room, is optional. You can add a glass hearth pad that protects the floor in front, a wood storage box, or a drawer and tool kit. Prefer a taller, narrower view? See the Valcourt Antoinette wood fireplace. The Valcourt St-Laurent ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.
FAQ
Is the St-Laurent a heating fireplace?
No; the Specifications tab rates it for under 1,000 square feet, lists it as exempt from high-efficiency certification and the description calls it an ambiance fireplace, with a 6.4 cubic foot firebox and a burn rate over 11 pounds per hour. Choose it for the linear view, not as a primary heat source.
How wide is the glass?
41-1/8 by 14-7/8 inches of ceramic glass in a guillotine door that slides under the hearth with a removable handle, per the description; the firescreen retracts the same way. The door opening is 44-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches and the unit is 63-1/8 wide, 63-3/4 tall and 31-3/4 deep.
What clearances apply?
84 inches to the ceiling from the platform, 8-1/2 inches to a combustible side mantle, 64-3/4 inches to a combustible top mantle, 24 inches to a side wall and 48 inches from the base to a shelf. The certification label on the unit overrides the published numbers.
Which chimney?
An 8 inch CAN/ULC S629 or UL 103 HT chimney at least 15 feet high from the approved list on the page. Not approved for mobile homes. The Options selector offers a 4 inch fresh air register with damper and a 20 by 70 inch glass hearth pad for the floor in front.
What are the required selections?
Contemporary moulded brick panels at no charge and a finishing trim: straight masonry for brick or stone at no charge, or the narrow overlap trim for tile at the price shown. Masonry trim installation instructions are in the Manuals tab. Logs up to 30 inches load across the width.
Weight and warranty?
Limited lifetime warranty with UL 127 and ULC S610 listings. Shipping weight is 765 pounds, and cast iron andirons and moulded refractory bricks are included. See other linear fireplaces for gas and electric alternatives in the same format.
