DuraVent DirectVent Pro Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit: a slimmer siding shield for the square wall cap

The DuraVent DirectVent Pro Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit is a four piece heat shield for the Square Horizontal Cap at an outside wall. It is slimmer than the one piece version and goes together around the vent opening, starting at the top and continuing counterclockwise. It holds the hot cap away from vinyl siding to help prevent melting or warping. It also gives the cap a flat seat on lap or shake siding. DirectVent Pro is DuraVent’s pipe inside a pipe vent for direct vent gas fireplaces and stoves: exhaust goes out through the inner pipe and outside air comes in through the outer pipe.

This kit is for horizontal runs only. Choose the material first: standard galvanized steel, stainless steel, or copper. Then choose the 4 by 6 5/8 inch or 5 by 8 inch vent size. For a stucco wall, a counter flashing serves the same purpose and lets the stucco finish meet its edges. Have a round, sconce, or H2 cap? Choose the DuraVent DirectVent Pro Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit Small. The DuraVent DirectVent Pro Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

Planning Your Installation:

  1. For vertical gas stove installations, measure the height from the stove outlet to the ceiling to determine the length of black pipe required. Select a ceiling support/wall thimble cover or a cathedral ceiling support box.
  2. To determine the length of galvanized pipe required, measure the ceiling thickness and the vertical rise in an attic or second story. Firestops are required at each floor level beyond the first floor ceiling support/wall thimble cover or cathedral ceiling support box. If an offset is required to avoid obstructions, use a pair of 45° elbows. For proper support, use elbow straps with offsets. Use wall straps for long vertical runs. Attic Insulation Shield is required in attic.
  3. Measure the roof pitch. Select the proper flashing and storm collar. Determine the minimum height above the roof.
  4. For horizontal installations, check the appliance manufacturer’s instructions for minimum rise and maximum horizontal run. A snorkel termination may be used if height restrictions prevent adequate rise above the appliance. Select the appropriate Horizontal Termination Cap (see appliance manufacturer installation instructions). To protect vinyl siding, select vinyl siding standoff. Check appliance manufacturer’s instructions for wall thimble and firestop requirements.

Design Recommendations

  • The following design recommendations are general guideline to assist in the design and selection of venting components for your installation. Always follow Duravent Installation instructions enclosed with the cap or support box before installing your chimney system. Installation instructions can be viewed online at www.duravent.com, under Catalogs and Instructions. Important: Check the manufacturer’s rating plate and instruction manual to confirm that the Duravent direct vent system is approved for use on the brand name appliance you have selected.
  • The inner and outer pipe diameters should match the outlet size of the appliance.
  • Check the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions to confirm which types of vent configurations are permitted (i.e. horizontal, vertical, chimney reline, etc.). Also, check for any venting restrictions such as maximum horizontal run, minimum and maximum vertical rise, maximum offset, etc.
  • Be fire safe! Maintain at least the minimum clearances (air-space) between the vent pipe and nearby combustibles, as specified in the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions. Use proper support and bracing. Follow local building codes and have your venting system inspected.

FAQ

What is the Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit for?

It is a four-piece heat shield that holds a DirectVent Pro horizontal termination cap off the wall so the cap’s heat does not warp or melt vinyl siding or other temperature-sensitive materials. It is also used on irregular sidings such as shiplap or shake shingles so the cap sits flat instead of being embedded in the siding. Horizontal terminations only.

Which cap and size does this kit fit?

This kit is sized for the Square Horizontal Cap. Choose the material (standard galvanized, stainless steel or copper) and then the vent size, 4 x 6-5/8 or 5 x 8 inch, on the selectors above. DuraVent’s cutout table lists the standard 4 x 6-5/8 kit at 13-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches and the 5 x 8 kit at 16 by 16 inches.

Do I need this if I have a round or sconce cap?

No; the Round Horizontal Cap, Sconce Cap and H2 cap take the smaller Vinyl Siding Standoff Kit Small, which is a separate listing. Match the standoff to the cap style first, then to the pipe size. If the wall is brick, block or fiber cement the appliance manufacturer may not require a standoff at all.

How is the standoff installed?

It mounts on the exterior wall around the framed vent opening, and the termination cap is then fastened to the standoff rather than to the siding. DuraVent’s instructions have the cap sealed to its mounting surface with a bead of non-hardening silicone and the supplied wood screws replaced with fasteners suited to the wall material.

Is it required by code?

DuraVent’s DirectVent Pro instructions call for the Vinyl Siding Standoff on buildings with vinyl siding or similar surfaces, and many appliance manuals repeat the requirement, so treat it as required whenever the cap would otherwise touch vinyl. The rest of the DirectVent Pro termination parts are listed separately.
