Osburn Matrix 1900: a compact insert for smaller masonry fireplaces
The Osburn Matrix 1900 is a wood insert for an existing masonry fireplace. Osburn rates it for 250 to 1,200 square feet, so it can heat a bedroom, a den, or a small open room. It is Osburn’s most compact insert, with tapered sides and a tapered top for smaller openings. An insert slides into the fireplace you already have and turns it into a real wood heater. It only goes into a masonry fireplace, the brick or stone kind, never a factory built one. Your chimney will usually need a steel liner run down to the insert, and the liner hookup parts are on the page.
Load it up and turn the air down, and it burns up to 7 hours. At full burn it puts out up to 45,000 BTU. The blower, a quiet fan that pushes the heat out into the room, comes with it. You pick the door overlay on the page, the trim around the glass door, in black or brushed nickel. The cast iron faceplate, the panel that closes the gap around the insert, comes with it. It burns dry, seasoned firewood. An outside air kit, which feeds the fire air from outdoors, is optional. You can add a firescreen for open door fires, a cuttable steel faceplate for openings the cast iron panel does not cover, and more on the page. Have a larger opening? See the Osburn Matrix wood insert. The Osburn Matrix 1900 ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.
FAQ
Is the Matrix 1900 a good fit for a smaller fireplace?
Yes, that is its purpose. It is a compact unit with tapered top and sides for easy installation in smaller hearths, rated for 250 to 1,200 square feet, which makes it the most compact of our Osburn fireplace inserts. Like every wood insert, it must only be installed inside an existing masonry fireplace.
Is a blower included?
Yes. A flush mount blower is built into the insert and designed to disappear from view, along with the discreet black wooden handle and the air control with its removable handle, so that the cast-iron faceplate’s patterned upper louver and columns remain the focus of the installation.
How long does it burn, and how clean is it?
Maximum burn time is 7 hours from a 1.1 cubic foot firebox (EPA loading volume 1.03) on dry 16-inch cordwood, with a maximum heat output of 45,000 BTU/h. Average particulate emissions are just 1.5 g/h, with 75% average overall efficiency (HHV) and 82% optimum overall efficiency.
Does it need frequent ash cleaning?
Less than you might expect. The deep bottom of the combustion chamber lets ash accumulate, which Osburn designed specifically to reduce how often you have to clean it out. As with any wood insert, how quickly ash builds up also depends on how much and how often you burn.
Do I need a chimney liner?
Venting requirements come from the owner’s manual and your local code. If your chimney calls for a liner connection, a Liner Hook Up System and an Offset Liner Adapter are offered on this page under Liners & Adapters, so the parts can ship with the insert instead of being sourced separately.
What if my fireplace opening is irregular?
A 32 x 44 inch cuttable steel faceplate is offered on this page under Faceplates, Doors & Overlays, which can be cut to suit an opening the cast-iron faceplate alone does not cover cleanly. A rigid firescreen sits in the same group, and the door overlay is chosen in black or brushed nickel.
