Osburn Matrix insert: a wood insert with a big square door
The Osburn Matrix insert is a wood insert for an existing masonry fireplace. Osburn rates it for 500 to 2,100 square feet, so it can heat an open living area or most of a smaller house. It has a modern look, a big square door, and an easier door latch. An insert slides into the fireplace you already have and turns it into a real wood heater. It only goes into a masonry fireplace, the brick or stone kind, never a factory built one. Your chimney will usually need a steel liner run down to the insert, and the liner hookup parts are on the page.
Load it up and turn the air down, and it burns up to 8 hours. At full burn it puts out up to 75,000 BTU. It burns dry, seasoned firewood. It meets the current EPA clean air rules. Nothing is required on the page beyond the insert itself. Depending on your opening you may need backing plates, flat steel panels that fill the space around the insert, and they are on the page. An outside air kit, which feeds the fire air from outdoors, is optional. You can add a firescreen for open door fires and a glass hearth pad, and more on the page. Prefer a traditional look? See the Osburn Matrix 2700 wood insert. The Osburn Matrix insert ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.
FAQ
Where can the Matrix wood insert be installed?
Only inside an existing masonry fireplace. Osburn’s warning states wood-burning inserts must never go into a wooden or combustible structure, and every installation must follow the data and drawings detailed in the owner’s manual. If you have a factory-built fireplace instead of masonry, contact us before ordering.
What does the optional projection kit require?
To install the projection kit AC01323, one of the faceplate backing plate kits AC01322 or AC01332 must also be purchased to secure the projection kit to it. Both pieces are available on this page, under Fresh Air & Projection Kits and Faceplates, Doors & Overlays, so order them together.
What if the faceplate does not cover my hearth opening?
Osburn notes that adding a set of intermediate trim panels may be required to complete your masonry hearth. This page also offers 29 x 44 and 29 x 50 inch faceplate backing plates and 44 or 50 inch bottom backing plates, so wider or taller openings can be finished cleanly.
How efficient is the Matrix insert?
It runs at an optimal efficiency of 79% with an average particle emission rate of 2.3 g/h, figures Osburn achieved in tuning this firebox to the industry standards required for 2020. Average overall efficiency is 72% (HHV) on dry cordwood, with 16-inch logs recommended.
How much space can it heat?
The recommended heating area is 500 to 2,100 square feet, with a maximum heat output of 75,000 BTU/h and a burn time of up to 8 hours. That capacity places it in the core of the Osburn fireplace insert range, sized for typical living areas.
Do I need a chimney liner for it?
Venting requirements come from the owner’s manual and your local code. If a liner connection is needed for your chimney, a Liner Hook Up System and an Offset Liner Adapter are offered as add-ons on this page under Liners & Adapters, so everything can arrive in one shipment.
