Primo Oval Junior Kamado: a small oval charcoal grill for your table or island
The Primo Oval Junior Kamado is a ceramic charcoal grill for someone who already has a table or island. It is Primo’s smallest oval, with 210 square inches of cooking space for about eight burgers. The grill head weighs 100 pounds. A kamado is a charcoal grill with thick ceramic walls that hold heat and moisture, so one grill can sear, roast, bake, and smoke. Primo is the only ceramic grill made in the USA, built by Empire Comfort Systems in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
The oval shape gives you room for a hot side and a cooler side. Kamado on this page means the ceramic grill head alone, with no stand, side tables, or tools. The head includes the firebox and stainless steel cooking grates. Choose heat deflector plates and their rack for roasting, baking, or smoking away from direct heat. These are sold separately. You can also pick the Primo GO carrier, a cradle and base for tailgates or camping. The optional extension rack adds 150 square inches. Prefer a package with side tables and tools? See the Primo Oval Junior All-In-One grill package. The Primo Oval Junior Kamado ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
What do I get with the Kamado-only Junior?
Just the ceramic grill head: dome, reversible cooking grates, firebox, fire grate, draft door and the cast aluminum top vent. It does not come with a cradle, side tables, ash tool, grate lifter or heat deflectors. Everything else is chosen on this page, with stands under Change Pkg Configuration and the deflectors and drip pan under Optional (Recommended).
Can I make it a portable grill?
Yes. Select On GO Portable Carrier in the package configuration selector to add Primo’s GO carrier at the price shown there. The Primo GO is Primo’s cradle-and-base carrier built for the Oval Junior; the brochure says it makes the Junior the largest portable ceramic grill available and that it also works on a deck or patio without a table or cart. A built-in style cover is offered with that choice.
What size is the cooking area?
You get 210 square inches on a 13.5 by 18.5 inch grid, and the optional rack system adds 150 square inches for a total of 360. Primo’s capacity guide lists three whole chickens, a small whole turkey, four steaks, eight burgers, four racks of ribs or six ears of corn per cook.
How hot does it get and how do I control it?
The listed range is 151 F to over 850 F. Temperature is set with air: the lower draft door feeds the charcoal and the 5-position top vent regulates exhaust. The Quick Start Guide says to close the top vent to one-third when you are about 25 F below target, then adjust in quarter-inch steps, each worth roughly 25 F. Raising heat is easy; lowering it is slow.
Does it need heat deflectors?
Only for indirect cooking. Grilling and searing directly over the coals needs nothing extra, but the guide marks the heat deflectors and racks as required for baking, roasting or smoking. On this grill-head listing they are sold through the Optional (Recommended) selector, along with a half drip pan that keeps drippings out of the coals or holds water for long smokes.
Where are Primo grills made?
In the United States. The brochure and spec sheets state that Primo is the only ceramic grill made in the USA, produced by Empire Comfort Systems, the fourth-generation family company that acquired Primo in 2019. Orders take four to six weeks to build and ship curbside. See the rest of the lineup in our Primo grill collection.
