SimpliFire Electric Insert: turn an old wood fireplace into an electric one

The SimpliFire Electric Insert is an electric fireplace insert for an old wood fireplace opening or a new framed opening. It comes in three widths from 25 to 35 inches. Pick the size on the page. The glass is 12 to 19 inches tall, depending on size. A log set sits above glowing embers. An insert slides into the fireplace opening you already have, so an old wood fireplace becomes an electric one. A surround covers the gap around it, or it trims itself in a new framed opening. Measure your old opening against the sizes on the spec tab.

It needs no gas line and no chimney. Plug it into a wall outlet on its own circuit, or have an electrician hardwire it. It gives 5,000 BTU of heat, enough to take the chill off the room. Run the flames with or without heat. It comes with a remote. In the box you get the log set and the remote. You can add a small or large surround to cover the gap in an old fireplace opening, and a Mission door front, a decorative front with a door look. Building a new fireplace wall? FAQ

How do I measure my existing fireplace for this electric insert?

Measure the opening’s front width, back width, depth and height and compare them with the minimums in the Specifications tab. The 25-inch insert needs at least 25 inches at the front, 18 at the back, 11-3/8 deep and 16-3/8 high; the 30 needs 30 by 23 by 11-3/8 by 20-5/8; the 35 needs 35-1/8 by 28-1/8 by 11-3/8 by 23-3/8. The architect guides show the drawings.

Do I need a surround, or does the insert trim itself?

It depends on the opening. In a wood fireplace opening a surround kit covers the gap around the insert; in a framed opening the self-trimming design finishes the edge on its own. Surrounds are optional and offered in small or large on the selector after you choose a size, with prices shown there. The manual notes the surround must remain removable for future service.

Does the insert plug in, or does it have to be hardwired?

Either. The owner’s manual says the insert is designed to be hard-wired for 120 V and that a plug-in kit is supplied for use with a properly grounded outlet. It requires a minimum 15 amp, 120 V circuit, and a dedicated circuit is recommended to prevent breaker trips. Never run it from an extension cord or power strip.

How much heat does it produce, and can the flames run without heat?

All three sizes are rated at 5,000 BTU/hr, enough to take the chill off the room rather than replace a furnace. Heat is adjustable from the multifunction remote, which also handles the thermostat, lighting and on/off, and the Features tab notes you can enjoy the flames year-round with or without heat.

Can I keep a mantel above the insert?

Yes, within the manual’s limits. With no surround installed, a mantel projecting up to 18 inches may be installed at least 1 inch above the top of the decorative front so the front can still be removed. With a surround, the manual says not to overlap it with a permanent mantel or other finishing materials. See Figure 3.3 in the owner’s manual for the drawing.

What is the Mission Door Front option?

A decorative door-style front sized to each insert. After you pick 25, 30 or 35 inches on the Size selector, the matching Mission Door Front appears on the Fronts and Doors selector with its price. It is optional; the insert works with its standard front. Browse other styles in our electric fireplace collection.
