Superior VRT3100: a vent-free firebox in three sizes that takes the gas logs you choose
The Superior VRT3100 is a vent-free gas firebox. A firebox is the steel shell that holds the fire. Your builder frames a wall around it and finishes it in stone, tile, or brick. It comes in widths of 32, 36, or 42 inches. Pick the size on the page. The face has no louvers, and air moves around the firebox to carry heat into the room. Brick panels line the inside. This page sells the WS version with brick panels and a brick floor. The F version, with brown fiber panels and a black steel floor, is available by request, so contact us before you order if you want it.
Vent-free means it needs no chimney or vent pipe at all, so it can go on almost any inside wall. It is the firebox only. You add a vent-free gas log set, sold separately, and the logs set the heat. A heat hood and mesh screens come with it. On the page you can add arched screen doors in textured iron, a blower, and an outside air kit. Check your local code first, since some areas restrict vent-free fireplaces. Want a 24 inch tall opening? See the Superior VRT2500 vent-free firebox. The Superior VRT3100 ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
Does the VRT3100 come with a burner and logs?
No. It is a universal vent-free firebox: the heat deflection hood and mesh fire screens are included, and you add any listed ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free log set, sized to the opening, from our ventless gas logs range. The vent-free logs brochure linked in the Manuals tab lists the compatible Superior sets and the minimum firebox sizes.
Which sizes are available?
32 in, 36 in and 42 in on the Size selector. Framing is 38-1/4, 42-1/4 or 48-1/4 in wide, 40-1/4 in high and 20-1/2 in deep. The Specifications tab lists two versions per size: WS with refractory liners and floor, and F with fiber liners and a black metal floor; the listing ships the WS model, so ask us if you want the fiber-liner version.
How much heat will it produce?
That is set by the log set you install, as the firebox has no burner of its own; vent-free log heaters are limited to 40,000 BTU per hour, and the room must pass the ventilation-air calculation in the installation manual. The heat-circulating clean-face design moves warm air on its own, and the optional blower on the Blower selector pushes more of it into the room.
Does it need a chimney?
No vent or chimney is needed, so it can be built into an interior wall or a remodel without a flue. It uses room air, so local code on vent-free appliances applies; the Outside Air selector adds a ducted kit that brings in outdoor air to improve burner performance and reduce condensation.
Can I add doors or a blower?
Yes. The Screen Door selector offers precision-cut twin-pane arched screen doors in a textured iron finish for each size, and the Blower selector lists a standard single-speed kit and a variable-speed kit with wall switch. Exterior touch-up paint and an on/off wall switch are on the Accessories row.
Why does a new firebox smell during the first fires?
New paint curing and manufacturing oils burn off during the first few uses, producing an odor and light haze that can trip a smoke detector. Superior’s firebox manuals call this the burn-in period: ventilate the room, expect it to last a few hours to a few days of use, and hold off running an optional blower until it is over.
