Superior WRT/WCT3000: a traditional wood burning fireplace with stacked brick and a roomy firebox
The Superior WRT/WCT3000 is an indoor wood burning fireplace. It comes in widths of 36 or 42 inches. Pick the size on the page. Your builder frames a wall around it and finishes it in stone, tile, or brick. Stacked brick panels line the inside, and a heavy log grate holds a good sized stack of wood. The firebox is insulated all around to help it perform in cold climates. This page sells the WRT model with a smooth face. The WCT model has louvers that move room air around the firebox and can take a fan. The WCT is available by request, so contact us before you order if you want it.
It burns real logs and uses an eight inch double wall chimney. The chimney pipe is sold separately, so ask us to quote the run. An outside air damper comes with it. On the page you can add bi-fold glass doors in black and an outside air kit. It can also take a gas log set later. Want a bigger view of the fire and screens that hide away? FAQ
What chimney does the WRT/WCT3000 use, and is it included?
It is listed for the IHP 8DM (1,700 F) or 8HT (2,100 F) double-wall air-cooled chimney, 8 in inner diameter; 8HT is required in Canada and recommended in cold climates, and the 42 in model uses a transition collar. Chimney sections and the termination are not part of this listing, so ask us to quote the run. The manual requires 14-1/2 ft minimum height for a straight flue, 22 ft with two elbow sets, and 50 ft maximum.
What sizes are offered and how big is the firebox?
36 in and 42 in models on the Size selector. Framing is 41-3/4 in wide by 41-3/4 in high by 21-7/8 in deep for the 36 and 49-3/4 by 47-1/4 by 23-1/2 for the 42. Interior firebox dimensions from the Smart Sheet are 32-1/2 in front width, 22 in rear width, 14-1/4 in depth and 21 in height for the 36, and 39 by 29-1/2 by 16-1/4 by 24 for the 42, useful when sizing a gas log set.
Can I burn gas logs in this wood fireplace?
Yes. The installation manual approves it for wood, for a vented gas log set listed to ANSI Z21.60 or Z21.84, or for a vent-free gas log heater listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 with an IHP hood fitted. The Smart Sheet lists compatible Superior vent-free sets such as Golden Oak, Boulder Mountain, Rugged Stack and Wild Timber. Log sets are separate purchases; see our wood burning indoor fireplaces for other convertible models.
What is the difference between the WRT and WCT versions?
WRT is the radiant smooth-faced model; WCT is the circulating version with rolled louvers above and below the opening that move room air around the firebox, and only WCT accepts the optional fan, listed on the Blower selector as louvered models only. The Specifications tab shows both SKUs for each size; tell us which face you want when ordering so the correct unit ships.
What hearth and mantel clearances apply?
The manual calls for a non-combustible hearth extension at least 16 in in front of and 8 in beyond each side of the opening. Wood trim, mantels or other combustible material projecting from the face may not sit within 12 in of the fireplace opening or within 9 in of the top louver, and material projecting more than 1-1/2 in must stay 12 in above the opening. Back and sides need 3/4 in to combustibles.
Are glass doors and outside air available?
Yes. Black-trim bi-fold tempered glass doors are on the Door selector for either size and improve safety with an open wood fire. The firebox has a built-in adjustable outside air damper, and the Outside Air selector adds the AK4 collar, hood and flex kit so the fire draws combustion air from outdoors instead of the room, which the manual suggests planning during rough framing.
