Osburn Stratford II: a wood fireplace with double cast iron doors
The Osburn Stratford II is a wood fireplace built into a wall. Osburn rates it for 750 to 2,200 square feet, so it can heat a large open area or most of a house. It has double cast iron doors. It is a non catalytic fireplace, so there is no catalyst part to replace, just a clean burning firebox. It meets the current EPA clean air rules. It is a zero clearance fireplace, which means your builder frames it into a wall during construction or a renovation. A chimney runs up from it, so you do not need a masonry fireplace. The doors close for long clean burns, or open with the firescreen so you hear the fire.
Load it up and turn the air down, and it burns up to 8 hours. At full burn it puts out up to 80,000 BTU. It burns dry, seasoned firewood. You pick the door overlay on the page, the trim around the glass door, in black or brushed nickel. A faceplate is the finished frame around the opening, and you pick the traditional or the modern style on the page. An outside air kit, which feeds the fire air from outdoors, is optional. You can add the firescreen door, a forced air kit that ducts some of the heat to another room, or a heat shield for a mantel shelf, and more on the page. Heating a bigger home? FAQ
How much space can the Stratford II heat?
The recommended heating area is 750 to 2,200 square feet, with a maximum heat output of 80,000 BTU/h from its 2.5 cubic foot firebox. Osburn calls its heating capacity exceptional, and it sits alongside the Everest III and Horizon in our Osburn wood fireplace range.
Is it a catalytic fireplace?
No. The Stratford II is a non-catalytic wood fireplace that still meets the EPA’s most restrictive emissions standards, with an average particulate emissions rate of just 1.2 g/h. That means no catalytic combustor to monitor or replace as part of routine operation.
Do I have to choose a faceplate?
Yes. Osburn’s installation manual states that a faceplate must be installed on this fireplace, so the Faceplates selector on this page is a required choice between the Traditional style, which ships as standard, and the Modern style upgrade. The door overlay finish, black or brushed nickel, is chosen the same way.
Can I burn with the doors open?
The double cast iron doors give easy access to the firebox, and a firescreen door is offered on this page under Faceplates, Doors & Overlays for open-door ambiance. Whether and how open-door burning is permitted for your installation is governed by the owner’s manual, so check it first.
Can its heat be moved to other rooms?
This page offers a Forced Air Kit, Traditional and Modern Gravity Kits, and 6-inch by 25-foot insulated flex pipe for forced air under Other Accessories and Fresh Air & Projection Kits. How they apply depends on your installation, so follow the owner’s manual and your installer’s guidance.
How long will it burn?
Maximum burn time is 8 hours from an EPA loading volume of 1.94 cubic feet, on dry cordwood cut to 16 inches. Average overall efficiency is 64% (HHV) with 70% optimum overall efficiency, and the overall heat output rate spans 12,700 to 60,700 BTU/h.
What about a mantel or shelf above it?
Clearances to combustible shelves and mantels are set out in the owner’s manual linked on this page. If your design needs it, a Heat Shield for Surround/Shelf is offered under Other Accessories, along with carrying handles to help move the fireplace into position.
