Superior VRT4500: a big insulated vent-free firebox with a 30 inch tall opening, up to 50 inches wide
The Superior VRT4500 is a large vent-free gas firebox. A firebox is the steel shell that holds the fire. Your builder frames a wall around it and finishes it in stone, tile, or brick. It comes in widths of 36, 42, or 50 inches, with an opening 30 inches tall that spans the full width of the box. Pick the size on the page. That tall opening fits Superior’s biggest log sets, the ones with 19 inch logs. The box is insulated all around for use in cold climates. On the page you pick the brick pattern for the inside, stacked or herringbone.
Vent-free means it needs no chimney or vent pipe at all, and nearly all the heat stays in the room. It is the firebox only. You add a vent-free gas log set, sold separately, and the logs set the heat. Mesh screens come with it, and the gas line can enter from either side. You can add an outside air kit for the left or right side. Check your local code first, since some areas restrict vent-free fireplaces. Want real kiln fired brick in a color you choose? FAQ
How big is the VRT4500?
It is Superior’s large custom vent-free firebox with a 30 in tall opening in 36 in, 42 in and 50 in widths on the Size selector, all at the same base price. The Specifications tab gives rough framing of 45-3/8, 51-3/8 or 59-3/8 in wide, 54-5/8 in high and 28-1/4 to 30-1/8 in deep, so plan the chase around those numbers rather than the opening size.
Is a log set included?
No. It ships as a firebox with refractory panels and mesh fire screens; you add a listed ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free log set from our ventless gas logs range. With a 30 in tall opening it takes the larger sets, such as the Mega-Flame series with 19 in logs, sized per the brochure in the Manuals tab.
Which panel patterns are there?
Two: stacked (included) or herringbone refractory panels, chosen on the Panel selector. The firebox is fully insulated for better performance in colder climates and has gas line knockouts on both sides, so the burner can be fed from either wall.
Does it need a chimney or outside air?
No chimney or vent. Because it uses room air, the Features tab notes dual left- and right-hand outside air kits for maximum performance; the Outside Air selector lists the 4 in collar with hood and flex, collar and hood only, and a floor-vent version. The installation manual’s ventilation-air check and local vent-free rules decide placement.
How much heat does it produce?
The heat comes from the log set, up to the 40,000 BTU per hour limit for vent-free log heaters, and the room must support that input under the manual’s formula. A big opening like this is usually paired with a 30 in or 36 in set, so the heat output is at the upper end of what vent-free allows.
Is there a blower or door option?
Not on this listing: the VRT4500 is a radiant firebox with no blower or screen door rows, only Size, Panel and Outside Air. Its mass of refractory panels and the insulated cabinet radiate heat into the room, and the mesh screens are included.
