Finnmark Designs FD-4: a two person indoor hybrid sauna with infrared heaters and a Harvia stove
The Finnmark Designs FD-4 is a two person indoor hybrid sauna. Hybrid means it has both infrared heaters and a traditional Harvia stove with stones, so you can choose a gentle infrared warm-up, a hot steamy sauna, or both at once. Red light lamps in the ceiling add a warm glow, and you can change the color of the lighting. The outside is thermo-aspen, which is aspen baked in a kiln so it will not warp or rot. The inside is Western Canadian cedar, a smooth wood that resists mold. Two tiers of benches let you sit up high for more heat or down low for less. A full glass door lets in light. It takes up about 49 by 49 inches of floor space.
The infrared heaters warm the room to 170 degrees, and the stove takes it to 190. Ladle water over the stones when you want steam. The infrared side plugs into a standard 120 volt household outlet. The stove needs its own circuit, wired by a licensed electrician. Inside you get the Harvia stove, a box of sauna stones, and a touchscreen control panel with Bluetooth that you can also run from your phone. A bucket and ladle are not included, so add them on this page along with a waterproof cover, a vinyl seat cushion, a cedar backrest, a headrest, and wood wax or oil. Need room for four? FAQ
What is a hybrid infrared and steam sauna?
It is one cabin with three heat sources you can use separately or together: UL-listed Spectrum Plus short-wave infrared heaters, a medical-grade LED red-light panel at 650 nm with color chromotherapy, and a Harvia electric heater with stones for a traditional hot, steamy session. The Trinity manual notes the Spectrum Plus heaters were built to tolerate steam, unlike carbon panels. Compare other hybrid saunas here.
What electrical service does the FD-4 need?
Two circuits. The infrared heaters and lighting plug into a standard 120 V, 15 A outlet with a NEMA 5-15P plug and draw 1,750 W. The Harvia Vega Compact heater is a separate 120 V, 15.9 A load that needs its own 20 A circuit, hard-wired by a licensed electrician; the Trinity manual says to hand the Harvia installation manual to the electrician and routes the heater wiring through the floor at the front left.
Are the traditional heater and sauna stones included?
Yes. The Includes tab lists the Harvia Vega Compact 1900 heater (1.9 kW) and one 29 lb box of Harvia AC3000 stones, and recommends buying an additional box so you can pick the best-fitting stones. A bucket and ladle are not included; a bamboo and aluminum bucket-and-ladle set and the SaunaLife SaunaZone bucket with speaker are offered in the Recommended Add-Ons selector on this page.
How hot does each mode get?
The infrared side is rated to 170 F and the traditional heater to 190 F, per the Specifications tab. The controller manual says to wait until the heater reaches its set temperature before pouring water on the stones, then use small amounts; water pooling on the floor means you are pouring too much. The Harvia heater’s own operating instructions govern its use.
How long does it take to heat up?
The Trinity manual lists 50 to 60 minutes for the 4 x 4 Trinity to reach its 170 F infrared maximum, and suggests 15 to 20 minutes of preheat before stepping in. Warm-up varies with the room temperature and airflow around the cabin. On first use, run it at maximum temperature for an hour two or three times to burn off factory dust, as the manual recommends.
Can I control it from my phone?
The Includes tab lists the V2 5 in LCD touchscreen controller with Bluetooth audio, and the V2 controller manual linked in the Manual tab walks through pairing it with the Smart Life app over WiFi to power the sauna, set target temperature and session time, change lighting and schedule sessions by day. The manual notes a 90-minute built-in timer and that only one Bluetooth device can connect at a time.
How much space does it need, and what is the two-tier bench?
The cabin is 48 in wide, 48 in deep and 83 in tall outside, with a 44.25 x 45.5 x 75.5 in interior of about 86 cubic feet; add the 3 inches of clearance on all sides and top that the manual requires. Inside, an upper and a lower bench let you sit higher for more heat or lower for a milder session, and give two people room to stretch out.
Can I run the infrared and the traditional heater at the same time?
Yes. It is one of the few saunas on the market where the infrared panels and the traditional stone heater run together in one session instead of one or the other. The Trinity manual notes the Spectrum Plus infrared heaters were built specifically to tolerate a traditional heater’s steam, unlike carbon panels. Bring the cabin up on the Harvia heater, add steam, and keep the infrared working on your body at the same time, or use either alone.
