Fire Magic Aurora A790i Built In Grill: a 36 inch gas grill with cast stainless steel burners
The Fire Magic Aurora A790i Built In Grill is a 36 inch built in gas grill. Built in means it slides into a cutout in an outdoor kitchen island, so it has no legs of its own. Aurora is for cooks who want Echelon burners and grates with a brushed steel face and simpler controls. Fire Magic builds it in the USA from 304 stainless steel, the grade that holds up best outdoors. Three cast stainless steel burners give 90,000 BTUs, and they are so thick that Fire Magic guarantees them for life. It gives you about 790 square inches of cooking space plus a warming rack.
The grates are Diamond Sear grids, thick stainless steel bars with a flat top for clean sear marks, and flavor grids under them turn drippings into smoke and keep flare ups down. The double walled hood holds heat like an oven, and halogen lights inside light the grates after dark. Push a knob in and a glow plug lights the burner, so plan for an outlet in the island. A dial in the hood shows the oven heat at a glance. A back burner and rotisserie kit for roasting a chicken or a prime rib on a turning spit is optional on the page. On the page you pick natural gas or propane, and a Magic View Window, a glass panel in the hood for checking food without lifting the lid, is optional. Need a smaller grill? FAQ
Does the Aurora A790i include a rotisserie?
Not in the base A790i-7EAN. The Backburner and Rotisserie Kit selector on this page adds the 20,000 BTU stainless backburner plus the heavy-duty motor, solid spit rod, two meat prongs, counterbalance and polished cover described in the Features tab, which makes it the A790i-8EAN listed in the Specifications tab. The price difference shows on the selector.
How much cooking space and heat does the 36-inch Aurora have?
The primary grid is 36 by 22 inches, or 792 square inches, with 90,000 BTUs from cast 304 stainless steel burners under patented Diamond Sear cooking grids. A 36 by 8 inch warming rack adds 288 square inches. Flavor grids beneath the cooking grids vaporize drippings and reduce flare-ups.
What cutout does it need?
Plan an opening 37 inches wide, 23 1/2 inches deep and 11 1/2 inches high; the Fire Magic spec guide lists a 38 3/4 inch control panel width and the insulating liner shared with the E790i for combustible enclosures. The countertop must be non-combustible and the manual requires 18 inches of clearance from combustible materials.
Does the hot surface ignition need power?
Yes. Push the knob in to energize the hot surface igniter, then turn up the gas; the Features tab notes 110 volt electricity is needed, and the manual specifies a weatherproof 120 volt, 15 amp GFCI outlet. The same supply runs the 12 volt interior halogen lights. Manual lighting with a long match is described for outages.
Can I add the Magic View Window?
Yes. Fire Magic offers the window on the Aurora A790 and A660 sizes, and the Optional Magic View Window selector on this page adds it, giving the -W model number. The glass panel lets you monitor food without opening the hood and losing heat. Browse the full Aurora series here.
Is it made for natural gas and propane?
Both. Choose on the Gas Type selector; natural gas is A790I-7EAN or -8EAN and propane is -7EAP or -8EAP. If the propane cylinder sits inside the island, the manual requires floor-level ventilation because propane is heavier than air and forbids storing a spare cylinder under the grill.
How does the Aurora compare with the Echelon line?
The page calls the Aurora the Echelon’s sister series: same Diamond Sear grids, cast stainless burners, flavor grids and double-wall 304 stainless hood. The Aurora uses an analog hood thermometer and a brushed stainless control face with hot surface ignition, while the Echelon line adds the black glass panel and digital options.
