Superior DRT35ST: a compact 35 inch see through direct vent gas fireplace for two small rooms
The Superior DRT35ST is a see through direct vent gas fireplace. See through means it sits inside a wall between two rooms, and both rooms see the same fire. It is 35 inches wide and has the smallest footprint of any see through fireplace Superior makes. It fits between a bedroom and a bath, or a study and a den, without taking up floor space. Inside is an oak ceramic fiber log set on a heavy grate.
It is set up for natural gas, and a propane conversion kit is on the page. Direct vent means a sealed pipe runs to the outside. It brings in air for the fire and carries the exhaust out, so the fire never uses the air in your room. It puts out up to 30,000 BTU. Electronic ignition lights it with a button. The vent can run from the top or the back. On the page you can add a blower, a remote, and a buff brick liner for the inside walls. Need a bigger window between the rooms? FAQ
What does see-through mean, and where can the DRT35ST be installed?
See-through means glass on both faces, so one fireplace is enjoyed from two rooms, for example a bedroom and bath or a study and den. The DRT35ST frames at only 38-3/4 in wide, 37-3/16 in high and 20-3/4 in deep, which Superior describes as the smallest footprint in its class. The electronic ignition version is listed for installation in bedrooms and manufactured homes when local codes allow.
How much heat does it put out, and how efficient is it?
The Specifications tab lists an input range of 30,000 down to 22,000 BTU on natural gas. The Smart Sheet linked in the Manuals tab rates the DRT35ST at 74.8 percent AFUE, helped by its clean-faced heat-circulating design. An optional blower on the Blower selector (standard or variable speed) pushes more of that heat into the room instead of letting it rise off the glass.
Does a see-through direct vent fireplace need a chimney?
No. It vents through a sealed 4-1/2 in by 7-1/2 in coaxial direct vent pipe that takes in outside air and exhausts outside, and the flue collar can be set for top or rear venting. The manual allows wall terminations at a ratio of 1 ft of vertical rise for every 5 ft of horizontal run, up to 20 ft horizontal. Only IHP Secure Vent, Secure Flex or Z-Flex GA components are approved.
What comes standard and what is optional?
Standard: tempered glass and a protective barrier screen on both sides, the ceramic fiber aged oak log set on a 1/2 in heavy-duty grate, black painted interior and a textured powder coat finish. Optional on the selectors: the buff stacked ceramic fiber liner, a blower, touch screen, LCD, two-button or on/off remotes, wall switches, glowing embers or volcanic stone, and exterior touch-up paint.
Does it need electricity to run?
Yes. The DRT35ST sold here is the electronic ignition model, and its manual states that external electrical power is required to operate the unit, so plan an outlet at the fireplace junction box during framing. Unlike some Superior traditional models, this manual does not list a battery backup, so treat it as a fireplace that needs household power to light.
Is it natural gas or propane?
The DEN model ships set up for natural gas. For propane, the Accessories row offers an electronic NG to LP conversion kit; the conversion must be done by a qualified gas technician per the manual, which lists 28,000 BTU input on propane.
