Superior DRT40ST: a 40 inch see through direct vent gas fireplace shared by two rooms
The Superior DRT40ST is a see through direct vent gas fireplace. See through means it sits inside a wall between two rooms, and both rooms see the same fire. It is 40 inches wide, the larger of Superior’s two traditional see through models. A strong pan burner sends tall flames through an oak ceramic fiber log set on a heavy grate, giving the fire a full look from both sides.
It is set up for natural gas, and a propane conversion kit is on the page. Direct vent means a sealed pipe runs to the outside. It brings in air for the fire and carries the exhaust out, so the fire never uses the air in your room. It puts out up to 37,000 BTU. Electronic ignition lights it with a button. It needs power at the fireplace, so plan an outlet when you frame the wall. The vent can leave from the top or the back. On the page you can add a blower, a remote, and a buff brick liner for the inside walls. Want a flush floor and a fire you can share with the patio? See the Superior DRT63ST see through direct vent fireplace. The Superior DRT40ST ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
How does the DRT40ST compare with the DRT35ST?
It is the larger of Superior’s two traditional see-through direct vent models: a 40 in opening rated 37,000 down to 27,000 BTU, framed at 48-1/2 in wide, 41-1/2 in high and 22-3/4 in deep, with a powerful pan burner and an oak ceramic fiber log set on a heavy-duty grate. The DRT35ST is the compact 35 in version with the same clean-faced heat-circulating design.
Does it need electricity?
Yes. The DEN model sold here has energy-saving electronic ignition, and the installation manual linked in the Manuals tab requires external electrical power to operate the unit, so plan an outlet at the fireplace junction box during framing. The optional blower on the Blower selector also needs that power supply.
Does it need a chimney?
No. It vents through a sealed coaxial direct vent pipe with the combination top/rear flue collar, up through the roof or out an exterior wall, taking combustion air from outside rather than either room. Vent pipe and terminations are supplied per the manual and sized by your installer. See other see-through fireplaces to compare sizes.
What is included and what is optional?
Standard: tempered glass and a protective screen on both sides, the oak log set with grate, a black painted interior and the textured powder-coat finish. Optional: the buff rustic ceramic fiber liner on the Liner selector, a standard or variable-speed blower, touch screen, LCD, two-button or on/off remotes, wall switches, volcanic stone, glowing embers and exterior touch-up paint.
Can it be converted to propane?
Yes. The fireplace ships for natural gas; the Accessories row lists the electronic NG to LP conversion kit for this model, which must be fitted by a qualified gas technician following the manual. Ask us if you need the reverse LP to NG kit for a later change.
Where can a see-through fireplace go?
Between any two rooms that share a wall, such as a living room and dining room or a bedroom and bath, since both faces are glass. The heat-circulating design warms both spaces, and the installation manual sets the framing, mantel and vent clearances for each side, so give your installer the manual link from the Manuals tab before framing.
