Superior VRE4200: a stainless outdoor firebox with a 28 inch tall opening for the gas logs you choose
The Superior VRE4200 is an outdoor vent-free gas firebox. A firebox is the steel shell that holds the fire. Your contractor frames a structure around it on the patio and finishes it in stone, stucco, or brick. It comes in widths of 36 or 42 inches, with an opening 28 inches tall that spans the full width of the box. Pick the size on the page. The front and every surface exposed to weather are stainless steel, and the screens are stainless mesh. Brick panels molded from real hand cut brick line the inside. On the page you pick the brick pattern, stacked or herringbone.
Vent-free means it needs no chimney or vent pipe at all, so nothing blocks the view above it. It is the firebox only. You add an outdoor vent-free gas log set, sold separately, and the logs set the heat. Superior’s Giant Timbers Outdoor and Mossy Oak Outdoor sets are made for it. You can add a brushed stainless hood, an outside air kit, and a drain pan. Want a 30 inch tall opening or a 50 inch width? See the Superior VRE4500 outdoor gas firebox. The Superior VRE4200 ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
What gas log set goes in the VRE4200?
The firebox ships without a burner or logs. Outdoors it is approved for any listed ANSI Z21.97 outdoor vent-free set, and Superior’s Giant Timbers Outdoor and Mossy Oak Outdoor sets are the ones its Smart Sheet features; indoors it also accepts any ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free set. Match the set to the 28 in tall opening and the 35 in (36 model) or 41 in (42 model) interior front width.
Does an outdoor vent-free firebox need a chimney or vent?
No. The manual states it requires no outside venting or chimney, which keeps the enclosure simple and inexpensive; it is a zero-clearance box that framing can touch except at the standoff spacers. Keep the supplied hood in place whenever the fire runs. For a tighter mantel clearance, the Deluxe Hood selector adds a brushed stainless hood, and the Outside Air row adds a ducted AK4 kit that improves burner efficiency.
Which sizes and interior patterns are available?
36 in and 42 in radiant smooth-faced models on the Size selector, each with a stacked or herringbone refractory liner molded from hand-cut firebrick, chosen on the Brick Pattern selector. Framing is 42-3/4 in wide by 46-1/2 in high by 20-1/2 in deep for the 36 and 48-3/4 by 46-1/2 by 20-1/2 for the 42. Compare more outdoor gas fireplaces by opening size.
How does it stand up to rain and weather?
The front face and every surface exposed to weather are 304 stainless steel, and the fire screens are stainless as well, so they keep their finish over time. The Accessories row offers a 36 in or 42 in drain pan for water that blows into the firebox. Because the manual warns against installing in windy or drafty areas, a covered patio or a sheltered wall is the better location.
How much heat does it produce?
The output is set by the log set you choose, not the firebox; the manual caps it as an unvented room heater not exceeding 40,000 BTU per hour. Outdoors that heat warms the seating area in front of the opening. If the same unit is installed indoors, the manual’s ventilation-air formula (room volume multiplied by 20, less other gas appliances) decides the maximum BTU rating you may install.
What clearances apply to furniture and the mantel?
The manual keeps curtains, furniture, clothing and other flammable objects at least 36 in from the front and 42 in above the top of the firebox, with at least 42 in from the top of the opening to a ceiling, and sets mantel heights by how far the shelf projects. The firebox must sit level or the log set will not burn correctly, and it should not be placed directly on carpet or vinyl.
