Superior VRE4500: a big insulated outdoor firebox with a 30 inch tall opening, up to 50 inches wide
The Superior VRE4500 is a large outdoor vent-free gas firebox. A firebox is the steel shell that holds the fire. Your contractor frames a structure around it on the patio and finishes it in stone, stucco, or brick. It comes in widths of 36, 42, or 50 inches, with an opening 30 inches tall that spans the full width of the box. Pick the size on the page. That tall opening fits Superior’s biggest outdoor log sets, the ones with 19 inch logs. It is built of stainless steel and insulated all around, so it works in cold climates. On the page you pick the brick pattern for the inside, stacked or herringbone.
Vent-free means it needs no chimney or vent pipe at all. It is the firebox only. You add an outdoor vent-free gas log set, sold separately, and the logs set the heat. Stainless steel mesh screens come with it. The gas line can enter from either side. You can add an outside air kit for the left or right side. Want real kiln fired brick in a color you choose? FAQ
Does the VRE4500 include a burner and logs?
No. It is a large outdoor vent-free firebox with refractory panels and stainless mesh screens; you add an outdoor vent-free log set listed to ANSI Z21.97, such as Superior’s Giant Timbers Outdoor or Mossy Oak Outdoor, from our ventless gas logs range. The 30 in tall opening takes the big Mega-Flame sets with 19 in logs.
Which sizes are available?
36 in, 42 in and 50 in models on the Size selector, all at the same base price, with stacked or herringbone refractory panels on the Brick Pattern selector. The Specifications tab lists framing of 45-3/8, 51-3/8 or 59-3/8 in wide, 54-5/8 in high and 28-1/4 to 30-1/8 in deep.
How much heat will it produce?
That comes from the log set: outdoor vent-free sets such as the Mega-Flame Outdoor are rated 40,000 down to 29,000 BTU, which is also the limit for vent-free log heaters. Outdoors that warms the seating area in front of the 30 in opening; the firebox is fully insulated to hold performance in colder climates.
Does it need a chimney or outside air?
No chimney. Because the log set uses room air, the Features tab recommends dual left- and right-hand outside air kits for maximum performance: the Outside Air selector lists the 4 in collar with hood and 3 ft flex, the collar and hood only, and a floor-vent version, with gas line knockouts on both sides. Follow the installation manual linked in the Manuals tab for clearances.
Is it built for weather?
Yes. It is stainless steel construction for long-lasting outdoor use with stainless steel mesh fire screens included. The manual sets the enclosure and drainage requirements for an outdoor chase; a covered patio or sheltered wall is the better location for any open vent-free firebox.
How does it compare with the VRE6000?
Same sizes, 30 in opening, insulated stainless cabinet and framing; the VRE4500 uses molded refractory panels in two patterns at the same base price, while the VRE6000 uses Mosaic Masonry kiln-fired firebrick in four colors and four layouts as a required, priced liner. Choose the VRE4500 for value, the VRE6000 for a real-brick look.
