The Lexington Hearth Tobacco Barn is a non combustible fireplace mantel that looks like an old beam. Lexington Hearth casts it from a mold of a real barn timber in its own non combustible mix, then paints each one by hand. The hand cut tool marks, deep cracks, knots, and growth rings on the ends come through in the casting. It has the rough look of aged wood. The shelf is 7.5 inches deep and its face is 7.5 inches tall.

It is non combustible, which means the material itself will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Your fireplace manual and local code set the exact distance above the firebox. It comes with a steel mounting bracket, the screws, and a touch up kit for the screw holes. The bracket screws into the wall studs, the mantel slides over it, and it takes two people to hang. On the page you pick the length, 48, 60, or 72 inches, and then one of five hand painted colors. What is the Tobacco Barn mantel made from?

It is cast in Lexington Hearth’s Burncrete non-combustible formulation, molded directly from a 7.5 in. by 7.5 in. barn timber. The mold captures the hand-hewn tool marks, deep checking, knots, and end-grain growth rings of the original beam, and each piece is then hand-painted. The material is certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, the vertical tube furnace test at 750 degrees Celsius.

What lengths are available?

48 in., 60 in., and 72 in. standard lengths, chosen on the Size selector; the longer sizes carry a price difference shown there. The page lists 72 lbs for the 48 in. mantel, 101 lbs for the 60 in., and 130 lbs for the 72 in., so plan on two people to hang it. Custom lengths are available on request if none of the standard sizes fits your fireplace wall.

How close can a non-combustible mantel sit to the firebox?

Closer than a wood mantel in most cases, but the actual number comes from your fireplace manufacturer’s manual and local code, which the installation guide says you must follow. As a general guideline the guide lists 6 in. minimum above appliances under 50,000 BTU and 12 in. minimum at or above 50,000 BTU. Measure that clearance to the bottom of the mantel when you mark the wall.

How is it mounted to the wall?

A steel mounting bracket and fasteners are included. The bracket screws into the wall studs (two for 48 in., three for 60 in., four for 72 in.), the mantel slides over the bracket, and self-drilling screws go down through pre-drilled holes in the top, never through the bottom. The guide covers wood-framed walls; for masonry it says to use anchors rated for four times the load.

What colors does the Tobacco Barn come in?

Five standard hand-painted colors: Maduro, Roasted Chestnut, Pale Honey, Eclipse, and Weathered Grey. Select the length first and the matching color choices appear. Because each mantel is individually cast and hand-painted, color, weight, and final dimensions vary slightly from the photos, and a touch-up kit is included for small blemishes. Custom colors can be matched on request.

Can I extend it or wrap it around a corner?
