Lexington Hearth Federal: a painted period style mantel with curved trim
The Lexington Hearth Federal is a painted period style fireplace mantel. Lexington Hearth casts it in its own non combustible mix and paints each one by hand. Its gentle curves, small beads, and dentil blocks recall the crisp painted woodwork in Federal era homes. The dentil blocks are the row of small tooth like blocks under the shelf. It is the line’s most formal profile, rather than a rustic beam look. The shelf is about 6.5 inches deep and 5 inches tall.
It is non combustible, which means the material itself will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Your fireplace manual and local code set the exact distance above the firebox. It comes with a steel mounting bracket, the screws, and a touch up kit for the screw holes. The bracket screws into the wall studs, the mantel slides over it, and it takes two people to hang. On the page you pick the length, 60 or 72 inches, and then one of three hand painted colors. Custom colors are available on request, but not custom lengths. Because every piece is cast and painted by hand, expect small differences in color and size from the photos. Prefer a plain wood beam look? See the Lexington Hearth Classic mantel. The Lexington Hearth Federal ships free from My Cozy Outdoors with No Sales Tax (except WY) and the full manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
What is the Federal mantel style?
A period-style painted mantel shelf with gentle curves, delicate beads, and dentil details, modeled on the crisp white-painted woodwork common in Federal-era homes. It is the most formal, architectural profile in the Lexington Hearth non-combustible mantel collection, a deliberate contrast to the reclaimed-beam looks such as the Rickhouse or Farmhouse.
What colors can I choose?
Three standard colors exclusive to this profile: Luna, Avocado, and Raven, selected after you pick the length. Custom colors are available on request if you want to match trim paint. As with every Lexington Hearth mantel, each piece is hand-cast and hand-painted, so there will be minor variation in color and final dimensions from the sample images.
How long is the Federal mantel?
It is offered in 60 in. (41 lbs) and 72 in. (50 lbs) lengths on the Size selector; the 72 in. carries a price difference shown there. The Lexington Hearth catalog linked in the Manuals tab lists the shelf at about 5 in. tall by 6.5 in. deep, making it one of the lighter profiles in the line. Custom lengths are not offered for the Federal, so choose between the two standard sizes.
Is it safe over a real fireplace?
Yes. The Federal is certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, the vertical tube furnace test at 750 degrees Celsius, so unlike a painted wood mantel it will not burn or degrade from heat. Clearance still follows your fireplace manufacturer’s manual and local code; the installation guide’s general guideline is 6 in. minimum under 50,000 BTU and 12 in. at or above.
What hardware is included?
A steel mounting bracket, screws for the bracket, self-drilling screws for the mantel, and a touch-up kit with filler putty, paint, and brush. The bracket mounts to the studs (three for 60 in., four for 72 in.), the mantel sets over it, the screws go through pre-drilled holes in the top, and the countersinks are filled and touched up.
Can I mount it on drywall without hitting studs?
No. The installation guide requires the bracket screws to penetrate wood studs at least 1.5 in., and if you cannot locate studs it says to open the wall and add wood or 16-gauge metal studs. For masonry walls it points you to anchors rated for four times the load, and for other wall types to a professional installer.
