Lexington Hearth Rockface: a limestone look shelf with rough chiseled edges
The Lexington Hearth Rockface is a non combustible fireplace mantel that looks like a limestone ledge. Lexington Hearth casts it from a mold of chiseled limestone in its own non combustible mix, then paints each one by hand. The face and sides have rough chiseled edges with flecks of mica that sparkle in the light. The top and bottom are smooth, and the light neutral colors suit almost any room. The shelf is 8 inches deep and 4.75 inches tall.
It is non combustible, which means the material itself will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Your fireplace manual and local code set the exact distance above the firebox. It comes with a steel mounting bracket, the screws, and a touch up kit for the screw holes. The bracket screws into the wall studs, the mantel slides over it, and it takes two people to hang. On the page you pick the length, 60 or 72 inches, and then one of two hand painted colors. Custom colors and lengths are available on request, so ask us if your wall needs a different size. Because every piece is cast and painted by hand, expect small differences in color and size from the photos. Prefer a smooth modern shelf? See the Lexington Hearth Horizon mantel. FAQ
What does the Rockface mantel look like?
A limestone ledge. The face and sides carry a rough chiseled edge while the top and bottom are smooth, and the chiseled surfaces are speckled with mica so they sparkle in the light. The cross-section is 8 in. deep by 4.75 in. high, and the two colors, Bluegrass Fog and Turfway Tan, are light neutrals meant to fit almost any decorating theme.
Is it actual stone?
No. It is cast in Lexington Hearth’s Burncrete formulation from a mold of chiseled limestone, which keeps the weight to 82 lbs at 60 in. and 94 lbs at 72 in. while reproducing the stone texture. It is certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, the vertical tube furnace test at 750 degrees Celsius.
Which sizes are available?
60 in. and 72 in., chosen on the Size selector, where any price difference is shown; the color choices then appear for that length. Custom colors and lengths are available on request. Because each piece is hand-cast and hand-painted, the page notes minor variances in color, weight, and final dimensions from the photos.
How close to the fireplace can the Rockface be installed?
The material will not burn, but placement must follow the fireplace manufacturer’s clearances and local code, as the installation guide states. Its general guideline is 6 in. minimum above appliances under 50,000 BTU and 12 in. above appliances at or above 50,000 BTU, measured to the bottom of the mantel. Mark that line on the wall before locating the bracket.
What is included for mounting?
A steel mounting bracket, pan-head screws for the bracket, self-drilling screws for the top of the mantel, and a touch-up kit with filler putty, paint, and brush for the countersinks. The bracket needs three studs at 60 in. and four at 72 in.; the guide covers wood framing and says masonry needs anchors rated for four times the load.
Does it come in the other Lexington Hearth colors?
No. Bluegrass Fog and Turfway Tan are exclusive to the Rockface, so the reclaimed-timber colors used elsewhere in the line are not offered on it. If you want a stone shelf with a matching non-combustible wall treatment, the Rough Sawn Wall Boards and the rest of the Lexington Hearth non-combustible mantel collection are cast in the same kind of material.
