How a wood stove vent works

Connector pipe stays exposed in the stove room. Chimney pipe takes over at the ceiling support box or wall thimble through the right adapter. Keep everything from that boundary to the cap in the same DuraVent line. You can connect either DuraVent room-side line to any DuraVent chimney line with the right adapter.

The pipe inside the room

Choose single wall stove pipe for room heat and 18 inches of clearance to combustibles. This black stove pipe also comes unpainted as stainless steel stove pipe. Choose double wall stove pipe for 6 inches of wall clearance and 8 inches at the ceiling. Its hotter inner wall helps draft and reduces creosote.

The pipe through the house

For wood stove chimney pipe, class A insulated chimney pipe uses two walls with insulation between them. People also call chimney pipe flue pipe or vent pipe. Triple wall chimney pipe adds an air space and underpins the ready-made 6 inch kits. You need to leave 2 inches between either chimney line and anything that can burn. Our factory-built chimney for wood burning fireplaces is an air-cooled double wall chimney that comes in 8 to 16 inch sizes and is built to order.

Kits, and going into a chimney you already have

Browse wood stove chimney kits for through-the-wall, through-the-ceiling, manufactured home and build-your-own options. You add straight chimney lengths separately because every house needs a different number. For an existing brick chimney, choose a correctly sized stainless chimney liner rather than running connector pipe up the old flue.

Not for a wood stove: pellet stoves and gas appliances

A pellet stove needs sealed 3 or 4 inch pellet stove pipe. Gas water heaters, gas furnaces and older gas fireplaces use B vent pipe. You cannot use either of these vents for a wood stove or wood fireplace.

Which size, and what goes in the cart

You need pipe that matches the stove outlet diameter, because a smaller diameter cuts the draft. Most stoves use 6 inch stove pipe, with 8 inch stove pipe next most common. You can choose the size you need on each product page.

A ceiling route needs adapters, connector lengths, a ceiling support box, chimney lengths, an attic insulation shield, roof flashing, a storm collar and a chimney cap. A wall route uses a wall thimble, an outside tee with clean-out and wall straps. An elbow kit gives you two elbows and a strap to step the chimney around a rafter or joist. Check your stove manual and local code for height. A straight chimney needs at least 10 to 15 feet above the outlet, and more than 4 feet above the roof needs bracing.

Your questions

What is the difference between stove pipe and chimney pipe?

The single or double wall connector stays exposed inside the room and never passes through a ceiling or wall. Insulated chimney pipe takes over at that boundary through an adapter, carrying smoke above the roof with 2 inches of clearance to combustibles.

What size stove pipe do I need?

Use the same diameter as the stove outlet, never smaller, because reducing it cuts draft. Most wood stoves use 6 inch, with 8 inch on some larger stoves. The chimney should match that size.

What is the 3-2-10 rule for stove pipes?

The chimney cap must stand at least 3 feet above the roof opening and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet, such as a ridge or dormer. Check your stove manual and local code when planning the final height.

Can I install stove pipe directly in an existing chimney?

No. The connector belongs inside the room, ending at the wall thimble or fireplace opening. An existing masonry chimney needs a stainless liner sized to the stove outlet, with a cap above and a connector at the bottom.

Can I run single wall black pipe all the way up?

No. Neither single wall nor double wall connector pipe can pass through a ceiling, attic or wall, or be enclosed. Change to insulated class A chimney pipe at the support box or wall thimble using the correct adapter.
