Lexington Hearth Hayloft Beam: an old beam look with room for photos and trophies
The Lexington Hearth Hayloft Beam is a non combustible fireplace mantel that looks like an old beam. Lexington Hearth casts it from a mold of a real hand hewn beam in its own non combustible mix, then paints each one by hand. The tool marks, dowel ends, nail holes, cracks, and knots come through in the casting. The shelf is 8 inches deep, and the face is about 5 and a half inches tall at the wall, tapering a little toward the front. The top gives you room for photos and trophies.
It is non combustible, which means the material itself will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Your fireplace manual and local code set the exact distance above the firebox. It comes with a steel mounting bracket, the screws, and a touch up kit for the screw holes. The bracket screws into the wall studs, the mantel slides over it, and it takes two people to hang. On the page you pick the length, 48, 60, or 72 inches, and then one of five hand painted colors. Because every piece is cast and painted by hand, expect small differences in color and size from the photos. Custom colors and lengths are available on request, so ask us if your wall needs a different size. Two foot extensions, corner pieces, and a matching bracket trim are separate pieces; ask us if you want a longer or wrap around run. Prefer a half log with a bark face? FAQ
How deep is the Hayloft Beam shelf?
The Hayloft is modeled from a hand-hewn beam with a cross-section of 8 in. deep and 5.375 in. tall at the wall edge, so the top gives you a usable 8 in. shelf for photos, trophies, or seasonal decor. The face shows rough-hewn tool marks, dowel ends, nail holes, checks and splits, and character knots from the original beam.
What sizes and weights are available?
Three standard lengths: 48 in. at 62 lbs, 60 in. at 82 lbs, and 72 in. at 102 lbs. Choose the length on the Size selector; the longer sizes carry a price difference shown there. Lexington Hearth can also cut custom lengths on request, so contact us if your fireplace wall needs something outside those three.
Can I put the Hayloft Beam mantel above a gas fireplace?
Yes, provided you keep the clearance your fireplace manufacturer specifies and local code requires. The mantel is cast in Burncrete and certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, so it does not carry the larger setbacks a wood mantel usually needs. The installation guide’s general guideline is at least 6 in. above equipment under 50,000 BTU and 12 in. above equipment at or above that output.
What comes with it, and what do I need to supply?
The mounting bracket, its fasteners, and a touch-up kit with filler putty, paint, and brush for hiding the top screw holes all ship in the box. You supply a stud finder, level, tape measure, a drill with a 1/8 in. bit, and an impact driver, plus a second person, since the installation guide requires two people for handling a mantel this heavy.
How many studs does the bracket need?
Per the installation guide: two studs for the 48 in. mantel, three for the 60 in., and four for the 72 in. The pan-head screws must penetrate each stud at least 1.5 in. If the studs are not where you need them, the guide says to open the wall and add wood or 16-gauge metal studs rather than relying on drywall anchors.
What colors does it come in?
Five hand-painted colors: Maduro, Roasted Chestnut, Pale Honey, Eclipse, and Weathered Grey, shown once you select a length. Because every piece is individually cast and hand-painted, color, weight, and dimensions vary slightly from the photos. Custom colors are available on request, and the same palette runs across most of our Lexington Hearth non-combustible mantel collection.
