Lexington Hearth Grist Mill: an old beam look for narrower fireplace walls

The Lexington Hearth Grist Mill is a non combustible fireplace mantel that looks like an old beam. Lexington Hearth casts it from a mold of a real beam in its own non combustible mix, then paints each one by hand. Deep weathered grain, tool and saw marks, small cracks, splits, and knots come through. It is one of the lighter rustic beams, suited to a narrower fireplace wall. The shelf is about 6 inches deep, and the face is 5.75 inches tall.

It is non combustible, which means the material itself will not burn, so it can usually sit closer to the fireplace than a wood mantel. Your fireplace manual and local code set the exact distance above the firebox. It comes with a steel mounting bracket, the screws, and a touch up kit for the screw holes. The bracket screws into the wall studs, the mantel slides over it, and it takes two people to hang. On the page you pick the length, 48, 60, or 72 inches, and then one of five hand painted colors. Custom colors and lengths are available on request, so ask us if your wall needs a different size. Because every piece is cast and painted by hand, expect small differences in color and size from the photos. What is the Grist Mill mantel modeled from?

A 6 in. by 5.75 in. beam, reproduced in Lexington Hearth’s Burncrete casting so that every nuance of the original comes through: deep weathered woodgrain, tool marks, saw marks, checks and splits, and character knots. It is hand-painted after casting and certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, the vertical tube furnace test at 750 degrees Celsius.

Which lengths and weights are available?

48 in. at 52 lbs, 60 in. at 69 lbs, and 72 in. at 86 lbs, chosen on the Size selector where any price difference is shown. With its 6 in. by 5.75 in. cross-section it is one of the lighter rustic profiles, which suits narrower fireplace walls and lighter framing. Custom lengths are available on request.

Can it be extended or wrapped around a corner?

Yes. The Lexington Hearth catalog lists the Grist Mill among the profiles offered with 2 ft extensions and corner pieces, and a matching decorative bracket trim is sold separately on our site to conceal the joint where an extension meets the mantel. Extensions and corners are not part of this listing, so contact us with your total wall width and we will price the pieces.

How high above a gas fireplace should the Grist Mill mantel go?

Follow the clearance in your fireplace manufacturer’s manual and local building code; the installation guide makes both mandatory. Its general guideline for non-combustible mantels is 6 in. minimum above equipment under 50,000 BTU and 12 in. minimum at or above 50,000 BTU, measured to the bottom of the mantel. Non-combustible does not mean zero clearance.

What comes in the box?

The mantel, its steel mounting bracket, pan-head screws for the bracket, self-drilling screws for the pre-drilled holes in the top of the mantel, and a touch-up kit with filler putty, matching paint, and a brush. You supply the stud finder, level, tape measure, drill with a 1/8 in. bit, impact driver, and a second person, since the guide requires two for handling.

How many studs does the bracket need?

Two for the 48 in. mantel, three for the 60 in., and four for the 72 in., per the installation guide, with each pan-head screw penetrating the stud by at least 1.5 in. The guide covers wood framing only; on masonry it directs you to anchors rated for four times the load, and if studs cannot be found it says to open the wall and add wood or 16-gauge metal studs.

What colors are offered?

Five hand-painted standard colors: Maduro, Roasted Chestnut, Pale Honey, Eclipse, and Weathered Grey, selected after the length. Every mantel is individually cast and hand-painted, so the page notes minor variances in color, weight, and final dimensions. Custom colors are available on request.
