Gas fireplaces by venting

Start with where the vent can go. More than 110 direct vent models have sealed glass fronts, take air from outside and send exhaust through a pipe to the wall or roof. No chimney is needed. More than 25 units in the ventless range need no pipe, but room size and local code matter. Without gas service, explore vent-free propane options that use fuel from an outdoor tank.

Choose your shape

For a contemporary wall, explore more than 50 linear designs with a wide flame over crushed glass. More than 35 see-through options let two spaces share one fire. Choose multi-sided designs for a peninsula or bay, or browse more than 50 corner-ready units. If you prefer a traditional look, compare log sets with brick or stone panels. Some slim units are only about 14 inches deep.

Freestanding units and inserts

Our freestanding stoves stand on the floor without a wall opening or framing. For an existing masonry hearth, browse the gas inserts that slide into the opening. Every unit needs a gas line and a licensed installer. Built-in units need framing by your contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chimney for a gas fireplace?

No. Direct vent units use sealed piping through a wall or roof, while ventless units need no pipe. The few B-vent units use a vertical vent. An insert can reuse the chimney of an existing masonry fireplace.

Direct vent or ventless, which should I choose?

Choose direct vent for sealed glass and outside air if you can route a pipe outdoors. Ventless needs no pipe, but your room must meet the manual's minimum size and local code must allow it. Call us and we will talk it through.

Natural gas or propane?

The flame looks the same. Every gas fireplace in the collection runs on natural gas, and most can be ordered for propane instead. Choose natural gas for existing service or propane from an outdoor tank where there's no service. Fuel is set during manufacture, so decide before ordering.

Will a gas fireplace work during a power outage?

Many will. Standing pilots need no household power, and many electronic ignition units have battery backup to light the fire. A blower still needs electricity, so it stays off during an outage. Check the product page for the ignition type.

Can I convert my wood burning fireplace to gas?

Yes. An insert slides into your masonry opening and vents through the chimney for a sealed fire. A gas log set sits in the existing open fireplace and is the simpler option. Never burn wood in a gas fireplace.
